A Method for Realization of Utopia: K. Mannheim’s Points of View

「이데올로기와 유토피아」에서 만하임은 이데올로기를 극복하고 유토피아를 실현하는 한 가지 특이한 방법을 제시하고 있다. 그의 분석에 의하면, 이데올로기는 특수적 이데올로기와 총체적 이데올로기로 구분되며, 특수적 이데올로기에는 특정적 이데올로기와 보편적 이데올로기가 포함된다. 그가 보기에, 이데올로기를 극복함으로써 유토피아가 실현되는 것이라면, 극복해야 할 것은 특수적 이데올로기가 아니라 총체적 이데올로기이다. 총체적 이데올로기는 인간 의식의 형식이나 구조 또는 의식 그 자체에 해당하는 것으로서, 그것을 극복하는 일은 곧 그것을 실현하는 일이기도 하다. 만하임의 이 주장은, 가치를 실현하는 일에 종사하는 정치인과 교사에게 ‘너 자신을 비판하고 교정하라’는 경고로 해석될 수 있다.

In the well-known book, Ideology and Utopia, Karl Mannheim proposes a peculiar method for realization of ‘utopia’. According to his analysis, the concept ‘ideology’ can be divided into ‘particular ideology’ and ‘total ideology’; ‘Special ideology’ and ‘general ideology’ belong to particular ideology. In his view, if the realization of utopia is nothing other than overcome of ideology, then the real target of overcoming effort is not particular ideology but total ideology. The concept ‘total ideology’ designates the structure or form of consciousness, or consciousness itself; The way of overcoming total ideology is exactly same way of realizing it. Mannheim’s this assertion can be interpreted as a serious warning to politician and teacher that you should criticize and correct yourself.
