Politics and Education: An Interpretation of Gorgias

「고르기아스」의 표면상의 주제는 ‘웅변술’이지만 그 내면적 주제는 ‘정치’이다. 플라톤은 이 대화편에서 소크라테스와 칼리클레스로 대표되는 정치에 대한 두 가지 상반된 관점을 드러낸다. 칼리클레스의 관점은 두 가지로 요약된다. 하나는 ‘권력지향’의 정치관이고 다른 하나는 ‘물질적 풍요’를 최선의 정치로 삼는 정치관이다. 이러한 칼리클레스의 관점에서 정치와 교육은 서로 다른 목적을 지향하는 서로 다른 활동이다. (칼리클레스의 관점은 우리의 통념이기도 하다.) 그러나 소크라테스에 의하면 칼리클레스의 권력지향 정치는 비도덕적 정치가 될 위험성이 있으며, ‘물질적 풍요’를 최선의 정치로 삼는 정치관 또한 옳은 것이 아니다. 소크라테스의 관점에서 좋은 정치의 기준은 물질적 풍요가 아니라 피통치자의 심성을 좋게 만드는 것이다. 정치에서 그런 목적을 지향할 수 있기 위해서는 통치자가 ‘좋은 것의 형식’에 대한 지식을 가지고 있어야 한다. 그리고 ‘좋은 것의 형식’에 대한 지식의 소유는 교육(파이데이아)에 의해서 가능하다. 소크라테스-플라톤의 관점에서 교육은 가장 좋은 것, 인간 행복의 정수이고 정치를 포함한 모든 활동의 기준이다. 그 점에서 보면 정치와 교육은 모두 ‘좋은 것의 형식’이라는 동일한 목적을 추구하는 활동이면서, 동시에 교육은 정치의 올바른 기준을 제시한다. ‘좋은 것의 형식’을 탐구하는 정치가는 교육의 참된 목적이 무엇인가를 탐구하는 교육학자와 다르지 않다. 소크라테스-플라톤의 정치와 교육에 대한 관점은 우리의 통념에 대하여 반성과 숙고를 불러일으킨다.

Plato presents two incompatible views of politics in Gorgias; one is that of Callicles’ and the other that of Socrates’. The nature of Callicles’ view of politics can be summarized as ‘power-politics’ and in terms of ‘the enrichment of materials’. Here politics and education are not related to each other. They are different activities to persue respectively different aims. To Socrates, Callicles’ view of politics has a grave danger of immorality and injustice. According to Socrates, the aim of politics lies not in the enrichment of materials but in making man better. This politics must be based on the knowledge of the greatest good in life, ‘the Form of the Good’, which can be realized through education(paideia). In Socrates-Plato’s view, paideia is the highest good, the epitome of human happiness and the criteria of all human activities including politics. Here politics and education pursue the same purpose and the same ideal, education presenting the criterion of politics. Also, it is the role of politics to assist the system of education. Therefore politics and education promote and facilitate each other. Socrates and Plato strive to teach the true aim of politics. In this way, their role is not different from that of educators who, by investigating the aim of education, clarify the aim of politics. Socrates-Plato’s view of politics and education stimulates the reflection of our common sense notions.
