주희 ‘미발함양’의 교육과정적 함의

Curricular Implication of Chu Hsi’s ‘Immersive Nourishing before the Activation of Mind’

본 연구의 목적은 주희의 미발함양 개념에 비추어 특별활동(‘교과 외 활동’)의 성격을 재검토하는 데에 있다. 널리 알려져 있듯이, 주희의 공부론은 궁리와 함양의 두 축으로 요약될 수 있다. 궁리와 함양은, 공부의 성격상, 오늘날의 교육에서 ‘교과’와 ‘교과 외 활동’에 각각 연결시켜 이해할 수 있다. 미발함양은 주희 공부론의 최종 시기에 제시된 것으로서, 본 연구에서 특히 이 개념에 주목하는 이유는, 미발함양은 ‘활동’을 통한 심성함양의 ‘원형’을 보여준다고 생각되기 때문이다. 여기서 ‘원형’이라고 말한 것은, ‘敬’은 모든 함양공부에 요구되지만 그 중에서도 특히 미발함양에서 두드러지며, 따라서 미발함양은 함양공부의 기준 역할을 하게 된다는 것을 뜻한다. 미발함양이 오늘날 ‘교과 외 활동’의 성격과 관련하여 주는 시사는 비교적 분명하다. ‘교과 외 활동’은 교과시간 이외에 이루어지는 모든 활동이 아니라 ‘성격상’ 교과와 구분되는 교육활동이라는 것, 그리고 그 활동이 교육목적으로서의 심성의 확충으로 연결되기 위해서는, ‘활동 그 자체’보다 활동에 수반되는 ‘경(敬)의 마음가짐’에 주목할 필요가 있다는 것이 그것이다.

The purpose of this study is to reconsider the nature of extracurricular activities in the light of Chu Hsi’s ‘immersive nourishing before the activation of mind’(未發涵養). As is generally known, Chu Hsi s theory of self-cultivation is composed of ‘investigation of Principle’(窮理) and ‘immersive nourishing’(涵養). When we consider the nature of two kinds of self-cultivation, ‘investigation of Principle’ is connected with school subjects, and ‘immersive nourishing’ with extracurricular activities. ‘Immersive nourishing before the activation of mind’ appeared in the last period Chu Hsi s theory of self-cultivation and continued to his death. The reason why this study pays attention to ‘immersive nourishing before the activation of mind’ is that it can be considered as a prototype of ‘immersive nourishing’ which is realized by way of ‘activities’. The ‘prototype’ in this context means that ‘mind­mastering’(敬) is prominent in ‘immersive nourishing before the activation of mind’, and therefore ‘immersive nourishing before the activation of mind’ can be regarded as a criterion of ‘immersive nourishing’. The suggestion of ‘immersive nourishing before the activation of mind’ to the nature of extracurricular activities is almost evident. It is that extracurricular activities are different from school subjects in nature, and that to realize the intrinsic aim of extracurricular activities we should pay more attention to ‘mind­mastering’ concomitant with activity than ‘activity itself’.
