Habermas’s Social Theory and Education: Communicative Rationality as a Criterion of Educational Communication

이 논문은 하버마스(Jürgen Habermas)에 의해 ‘의사소통적 합리성’의 개념으로 재구축된 이성 또는 합리성의 개념을 교육학적 개념으로 해석하는 일이 어떻게 이루어질 수 있는지를 보이기 위해 작성되었다. 서론에서는 이성의 고대희랍적 의미와 근대적 이성에 대한 현대사상가들의 비판들을 개략적으로 서술하고, 제Ⅱ장에서는 하버마스 사회이론의 출발점이라고 할 수 있는 제1세대 비판이론가들의 부정적 이성 비판 논의, 그것과 관련된 합리화의 역설이라는 논제를 검토한다. 제Ⅲ장은 근대성의 역설에 따른 인간 이성의 비인간적 측면과 그것을 통한 어두운 시대 진단을 하버마스는 어떻게 극복하고 있는지를 다루며, 제Ⅳ장에서는 하버마스의 의사소통적 행위 이론, 그리고 그것을 통한 합리성의 재구성이라는 논제를 교육 행위와의 관련 속에서 분석한다. 결론에서는 하버마스의 의사소통적 행위 이론과 그것이 추구하는 합리성을 교육 상황에 대응시켜 기술한다.

The purpose of this essay is to show how the concept of reason or rationality reconceptualized by Jürgen Habermas as the concept of communicative rationality can be interpreted into a concept that we can use as a criterion in our everyday educational practices. In the introduction the author describes the ancient Greek ideal of logos and gives some general picture of its modernist concept. The negative critique of modernist reason by the first generation Critical Theorists which Habermas took as the main target of his critique and the conception of the paradox of the Enlightenment rationality is discussed in chapter 2. And in chapter 3 the author discusses how Habermas overcomes the dark side of the modernist reason and the inhuman situations brought about by the ideal, together with Max Weber s diagnosis about the modern Western society. Chapter 4 discusses Habermas s concept of communicative action and rationality and how it can be connected to educational activities. In the conclusion the author shows how educational communication can be paraphrased in Habermasian languages of communicative action and rationality, and argues that the theory of communicative rationality can be utilized as an educational term without serious modifications.
