The Meaning of Mind-Cultivation in Chu Hsi s Theory of Education: A Metapractical Perspective

주희 공부론에 대한 종래의 해석은 미발(未發)이 메타프락시스적 개념 이라는 점에 주목하지 못하고 있다. 미발은 형이상학적 개념이면서 동시에 공부의 구체적 사태에서 드러나는 마음의 역동성을 기술하는 메타프락시스적 개념으로서의 성격을 가진다. 이 관점에서 보면, 미발은 공부의 구체적 사태에서 드러나는 본체(性)의 역동적 양상을 기술하는 개념으로 해석되며, 공부의 사태는 ‘정(靜)에서 동(動)으로의 운동’과 ‘동(動)에서 정(靜)으로의 운동’이 동시에 전개되는 사태로, 함양과 궁리는 이 두 방향의 운동에 상응하는 실천적 원리에 해당하는 것으로 해석된다. 이 점에서 함양과 궁리는 결코 분리된 채로 일어날 수 있는 두 가지 공부가 아니다. 함양은 궁리의 주관적 측면에 해당하며, 그런 만큼 그것은 궁리 공부의 중요성과 난점이 무엇인가를 드러내어 준다. 현대적 관점에서 보면, 주희의 함양은 교과공부의 중요성과 난점을 극적으로 부각시켜준다는 점에 의의가 있다고 말할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to reveal the conceptual status of the Mind-Cultivation (涵養) in the system of Chu Hsi(朱熹) s theory of Education. According to his theory of the Equilibrium and Harmony of Mind(中和論), at the state of Wei-Fa (未發), one must cultivate his own mind, and at the state of Ei-Fa (已發). one must investigate of principle of things. But Wei-Fa is not the temporal state of mind in which we can encounter the transcendental reality(本體). Chu criticizes his teacher s theory of Reality-Watching Meditation . The concept of Wei-Fa is as much the metaphysical concept as the metapractical concept. As the metapractical concept, Wei-Fa is the technical concept to reveal the dynamic mode of reality in the context of self-cultivation(工夫) in which two movements of mind concur. i.e. the movement from Quietness(靜) to Activity(動), from Activity(動) to Quietness(靜). Mind-Cultivation‘ is the practical principle which corresponds to the movement from Quietness(靜) to Activity(動), and Investigation of Principle is the practical principle which corresponds to the movement from Activity(動) to Quietness(靜). In this interpretation, Mind-Cultivation and Investigation of Principle cannot separated practices. The former is the subjective aspect of the latter. it reveals the fundamental importance and difficulty of the Investigation of Principle which has the same nature of the study of school subjects at today.
