오우크쇼트의 정치 이론과 교육 이론

Political Theory of M. Oakeshott and Education

본 연구는 오우크쇼트의 정치이론을 <중용>에 비추어 해석하였다. 오우크쇼트에 의하면, 정치 행위는 ‘암시’나 ‘정합성’을 추구하는 것으로, 다시 말해서 천명(天命)으로서의 성(性)을 근거로 하는 것으로 파악되어야 한다. 모든 사회는 자생력이나 치유력을 충분히 보유하고 있으며 나름대로 건강하다. 그러나 정치가들에 의하여 수행되는 이러한 의식적인 정치 활동만이 정치 행위로 파악되어서는 안 된다. 오우크쇼트에 의하면, 제도를 따르는 일반인의 일상적 행동이, 제도를 보존하고 변형, 전수하는 기능을 수행한다는 점에서, 정치 행위가 된다. 그리고 특별한 제도로서의 학문을 추구하는 교과 활동은, 성(性)을 실현하여 의식적 정치 행위와 무의식적 정치 참여(제도를 따르는 일상적 행동)에 기여하므로, 또 다른 정치 행위가 된다. 오우크쇼트-<중용>의 관점에 의하면, 정치-이상에서 말한 세 가지 범주의 정치 행위-는 천명으로서의 성과 관련되어 있다는 점에서 종교적 의미를 지닌다(제정일치(祭政一致)). 그리고 정치 행위는 그에 가담하는 사람들로 하여금 성을 실현하게 해 준다는 점에서 교육적 의미를 지닌다(정교일치(政敎一致)). 마지막으로, 이러한 정치이론(정치철학)은 스스로 하나의 교과라고 말할 수 있으며, 특별한 교과라고 말할 수 있다. 오우크쇼트에 의하면, 정치이론은 전복적인 성격을 지니고 있다.

This study interpreted M. Oakeshott s Political Theory on the basis of Neo-Confucianism. According to M. Oakeshott s political theory, political behaviour must be seen to pursuit intimations or coherence . Every society which is existing and has been existing, must be regarded as healthy. However, there are other kinds of political behaviour in addition to the conscious political activity conducted by politicians. According to M. Oakeshott s political theory, everyday activity of the common people which suscribes to the institutions or the customs, can be regarded as the political behaviour because that activity preserves, reforms and transmits the institutions or the customs. And those institutions of school subjects must be regarded as the political behaviour, too. Because those activities realize Xing(性) as Tian Ming(天命) and contribute to the conscious political activity conducted by politicians and to thw everyday activity of the common people which suscribes to the institutions. According to M. Oakeshott s political theory, politics has the religious meaning because it is not indifferent to Xing as Tian Ming(Politics as Religion). And politics has the educational meaning because it makes those who participate in it realizes Xing as Tian Ming(Politics as Education). Political theory, that is, political philosophy like this must be seen as a kind of school subjects, though it is a very special kind. According to M. Oakeshott, political theory or political philosophy is subversive.
