人間本性과 그 涵養

A theory on cultivation of human nature and Mind - Mencius and Xunzi

  • 33

This study proposes to demonstrate that Xunzi s human nature(性) and Mind(心) contains a trait of Meta-praxis and its theoretical structure has a logical, or twofold relationship with each other. A trait of Meta-praxis is found in the cultivation of human nature and mind, which are derived from Heaven(天) as a metaphysical criterion. I believe that a ritual(禮) is a concept as totality and has an important role as meditation between Heaven and human a in the Xunzi. First, Xunzi argues that the Heaven is related on human nature. Generally, most researchers conclude that Xunzi s Heaven is not a metaphysical concept but a physical one(自然天). The Heaven in the Xunzi, however, is non-physical because of non-shape(無形). In addition, the human nature is derived from Heaven. The term Heaven means a concept as a logical assumption, and Xunzi argues that it is miraculous . If so, why did Xunzi argue xing e(性惡) ? The term e(惡) do not mean that human nature is tendency for only evil. Xunzi s e is applicable to feeling and desire . According to Xunzi, human body is insufficient as communicational meditation. Therefore Xunzi argues that human being realizes the human nature related to the Heaven and self-insufficiency of body. Finally, Xunzi proposes that a man must perform a ritual. This is related to Education and politics. Xunzi believes that performing a ritual is the only way to elucidate Confucius theory in Lunyu(論語). This is because a ritual is related to twofold structure. Xunzi s cultivation theory, therefore, needs to demonstrate a traditional Confucian meta-praxis.
