도덕교육에서의 知와 行의 관계

The Unity of Knowledge and Action : Chu Hsi and Wang Yang-ming

도덕교육에 관한 통념에서는 ‘지행의 괴리’(‘알면서도 행하지 않는다’)를 해결해야 할 문제로 지적하는 가운데, ‘知는 行에 앞선다’는 생각, ‘知는 도덕 규범에 관한 지식이다’라는 생각을 드러내고 있다. 왕양명과 주희는 이 두 생각을 각기 다른 관점에서 교정하면서도 다같이 ‘지행의 합일’을 내세운다. 왕양명은 知와 行의 순서를 바꾸고 知를 良知로 규정하면서 ‘行의 논리적 가정이 知(良知)이다’(‘행한다면 안다고 보아야 한다’)라는 견해를 제시하는 데에 비하여, 주희는 知와 行의 순서를 그대로 두고 知를 내면화된 知로서의 ‘心性’으로 규정하면서 ‘知(心性)의 표현이 行이다’(‘안다면 자연스럽게 行으로 표현된다’)라는 견해를 제시한다. 이 주희의 견해는, 성리학의 핵심을 이루는 ‘중층구조의 아이디어’에 비추어 해석된 것으로서, 왕양명의 견해와 마찬가지로 지행 문제가 ‘훌륭한 사람’으로서의 聖人의 형성에 관한 문제라는 사실을 보여주지만, 그것과는 다르게 지행 문제가 ‘교과 공부를 통한 심성함양’의 문제로 귀착된다는 사실을 보여준다.

The Unity of Knowledge and ActiIn the field of moral education, there is a common view that students should be trained to bridge the gap between their knowledge and action, assuming that knowledge precedes action and that knowledge in this case refers to knowledge about moral norms. By examining the validity of these two assumptions, Wang Yang-ming and Chu Hsi reached the conclusion that there is no gap between knowledge and action, though their viewpoints were different from each other. In his doctrine of the unity of knowledge and action , Wang Yang-ming offers the view that moral action presupposes knowledge which is equivalent to innate knowledge in the Mencian sense. On the other hand, Chu Hsi s doctrine of knowledge preceding action , when interpreted in the light of the idea of double-layer structure which is characteristic of Neo-Confucianist way of thinking, turns out to imply the view that knowledge in its internalized state, that is, the unmanifested or primordial mind , naturally manifests itself in moral action. These two views agree on the point that moral education, including the realization of the unity of knowledge and action, consists in the pursuit of sagehood, but, unlike the former, the latter clearly shows that it consists in the cultivation of mind through learning the school subjects.on :Chu Hsi and Wang Yang-ming
