불교 수행이론에 비추어 본 교과의 의미

The Meaning of School Subjects with the Viewpoint of Principles of Buddhist Practice

이 연구의 목적은 불교 수행이론을 탐색함으로써 교과의 의미를 명백히 하는 데에 있다. 통념에서 교육과 불교 수행의 관련을 탐색하는 것은 불교 수행을 교육과 무관한 별개의 전통으로 간주하고, 그러한 전통에서 모종의 교육적 시사를 도출하는 방법을 취할 가능성이 크다. 이와는 달리 본 연구에서는 불교 수행의 전통이 교육의 관점으로 해석될 수 있다는 것, 그리하여 불교 수행에 관한 이해가 곧 교육에 관한 이해라는 점을 부각시킨다. 열반에 이른 석가모니가 깨달음의 상태를 전하고자 할 때, 그가 드러낸 번민과 결단은 불교 수행의 한계와 가능성을 동시에 보여주고 있다. 선종의 수행이론은 한편으로 언어와 깨달음의 차이점에 주목하고 깨달음을 사실의 수준에서 파악함으로써 교육이론으로서의 한계를 드러내지만, 다른 한편으로 교과의 성격을 마음으로 규정할 수 있게 한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. 반면 교종의 수행이론은 언어와 깨달음의 유사성에 주목하여 그 수행이 항시 언어주의에 빠질 위험성을 안고 있으면서도, 언어의 불가피성과 가능성, 즉 언어를 배제한 마음의 획득은 가능하지 않다는 점을 강조한다. 아울러 교종의 수행이론은, 선종의 수행이론과는 달리, 실재는 수행과 더불어 보다 멀리 위치하게 된다는 점도 함께 일깨워주고 있다.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of school subjects by investigating the principles of Buddhist practice. In common view of comparative studies in education, it may be considered to investigate the relation between education and Buddhist practice as drawing some educative suggestions from Buddhist practice, education and Buddhist practice being regarded as different human experiences. But in this study, Buddhist practice can be interpreted with the viewpoint of education, thereby understanding of Buddhist practice being that of education in itself. When the Buddha reached nirvana, he had agony of mind whether he would keep silence or explain nirvana. His decision to explain nirvana after agony reveals the possibility and limit of Buddhist practice. The principle of Sǒn[禪] school is short of educational theory by grasping nirvana in phenomenal world without language (scripture), focusing the difference between language and awakening . But it contributed to our interpreting the original form of school subjects as mind. On the other hand, the principle of Kyo[敎] school has the peril of verbalism in Buddhist practice, focusing the similarity between language and awakening . But it emphasizes that it is not possible to awaken without language . In addition to this, in the principle of Kyo[敎] school it is stressed that Reality is far off in proportion to cultivation of mind.
