The Moral Educational Implications of Kantian Ethics : Freedom as a Form of Morality

이 글은 칸트 철학, 특히 그의 자유에 관한 논의를 고찰함으로써 현대도덕교육에서 가장 근본적인 이론적 문제로 취급되고 있는 도덕성의 형식과 내용의 관계 문제를 새롭게 조명하는데 그 목적이 있다. 먼저, 칸트의 자유는 「순수이성비판」에서 인식의 조건으로 상정된 ‘선험적 자유’를 가리킨다. 선험적 자유는 인식의 논리적 가정이라는 점에서 사변적이고 가상적인 것으로 이해되며, 이 점에서 칸트의 자유는 도덕교육과 무관한 것으로 간주될 수 있다. 그러나 「실천이성비판」에서 칸트의 자유는 그의 윤리학적 논의를 통해 실천적 관점에서 새롭게 해석될 수 있는데, 그것이 바로 ‘실천적 자유’이다. 실천적 자유는 도덕법칙과의 관계를 통해 확립된 도덕성의 근거 또는 형식으로서 도덕적 행위자에게 끊임없이 빛을 비추는 ‘삶의 기준’으로 이해된다. 이와 관련하여, 칸트는 「실천이성비판」에서 자유와 정언명법을 바탕으로 마음의 구조와 역동성을 한꺼번에 드러내고 있다. 이렇게 보면, 칸트의 자유는 인간 마음의 핵심부에 위치한 ‘표현이전의 표준’ 또는 ‘기준’으로서의 도덕성의 형식이며, 도덕교육을 가능케 하는 이념(理念)이라 할 수 있다.

The purpose of the present study is to illuminate in a new perspective the relationship between the forms and contents of morality, which have been dealt with as the most fundamental theoretical problem in the modern moral education, by considering Kant s ethics, especially his discussions on freedom. First, Kant s freedom is the ‘transcendental freedom assumed as the condition of cognition in his Critique of Pure Reason . Transcendental freedom is perceived to be speculative and hypothetical in that it is a logical assumption of cognition. In this regard, Kant s freedom can be viewed as unrelated with moral education. However, in the Critique of Practical Reason , Kant s freedom can be interpreted in the practical perspective through his ethical discussions. It is the ‘practical freedom’, which is understood as the ‘standard in life that enlightens the moral agent as the foundation or form of morality established through the relationship with moral rules. In this regard, Kant reveals both the structure of mind and its dynamics based on freedom and the categorical imperative. Accordingly, Kant s freedom is a moral form as the ‘standard before expression present in the core of human mind, and it may be the ideal type that makes moral education possible.
