Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of self-care competency, family support, depression, and life satisfaction in older patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This study was a descriptive correlation study. The study subjects included one hundred twenty one older patients diagnosed with type II diabetes mellitus who visited the endocrinology outpatient clinic at one university hospital located in metropolitan city B. Data collection was conducted with the structured self-report questionnaire from September 15th to October 30th, 2019. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression. Results: Life satisfaction had a significant positive correlation with self-care competency (r=.47, p<.001) and family support (r=.29, p=.001) and had a significant negative correlation with depression (r=-.68, p<.001). In the final multiple regression analysis, the factors influencing life satisfaction of subjects were self-care competency (β=.18, p=.013) and depression (β=-.54, p<.001). The explanatory power of self-care competency and depression on life satisfaction was 51.8% (F=26.69, p<.001). Conclusion: Increasing self-care competency and decreasing depression in older patients with diabetes mellitus will ultimately improve their life satisfaction and positively impact on their ability to enjoy a healthy life in old age.
