예술과 의학의 융합 가능성

Possibilities in Convergence of Arts and Medicine: Medical Humanities focusing on Visual Arts

오늘 날 학문 분과 간 결합과 상호 침투가 매우 활발하게 일어나고 있으며, 이러한현상을 가리키는 ‘융합(convergence)’이 대표적인 키워드로 자리 잡으면서 융합 담론이 지배적이다. 특히 인문학과 자연과학의 융합이 인간과 사회에 대한 전체적인 통찰을 제공함으로써 현대사회의 당면 문제 해결에 필요한 혁신적이고 창의적인 지식을 생성할 수 있다는 신념이 팽배하게 되었다. 이러한 신념을 토대로, 최근 의료인문학 분야는 현대 의학과 의료현장의 비인간화 현상에 대한 대안으로서 ‘예술과 의학의 만남’에 관한 논의를 활발하게 전개하고 있다. 예술과 의학의 첫 만남은 고대사회의 종교적,주술적 기원에서 찾을 수 있으나, 근대에 와서 과학적 의학이 발전하면서 두 분야는결별하게 되었다가 현대의학이 전인적 의료, 의사와 환자와의 소통과 공감을 지향함에따라 의료인문학 안에서 재결합하고 있다. 그 중에서도 시각예술과 의학은 상상력과재현력을 매개로 서로의 영역에 공헌하였다. 이 논문은 시각예술과 의학의 역사 속에서 두 분야가 결합되었던 접점들과 그 융합 가능성을 다음의 두 가지 형태로 고찰해 봄으로써 시각예술 중심의 의료인문학을 제안하고자 한다. 첫째, ‘의학 안의 시각예술’은미술가와 의사들의 협업에 의한 해부도의 변천과 의료정보 애니메이션 사례를 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 둘째, ‘시각예술 안의 의학’은 의사의 의료 행위를 작품의 소재와주제로 다루거나 의학 기술을 직접적으로 사용한 미술작품 사례를 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 이같은 시각예술과 의학의 융합 사례들을 의료인문학의 내용으로 제안함으로써 이 연구는 시각예술 중심의 의료인문학의 기초 연구로서 가치를 지닌다.

Today, many academic disciplines have been actively interconnected and penetrated each other. To highlight the recent phenomena, the word,‘convergence’ as a key term, has been frequently used. Especially, It is believed that convergence between humanities and natural sciences can generate an innovative and creative knowledge to solve current problems of today’s society by providing insight. Based on this belief, the field of medical humanities have led an active discussion on the convergence of arts and medicine as an alternative to dehumanizing phenomena of modern medicine and medical practices. However, this topic has mostly focused on medicine and medical education and it has been on its beginning stage. The first integration of arts and medicine was found in religious and shamanistic origin in the ancient society. With modern scientific revolution, as modern scientific medicine developed, arts and medicine had been separated. The two fields have been reunited since modern medicine has become to pursue holistic medicine, and active communication and empathetic interaction between doctors and patients. Especially, visual arts and medicine have contributed to each other through its imagination and representation. This study examines cases of convergence of visual arts and medicine: visual arts in medicine and medicine in visual arts. These cases will be suggested as a foundation to medical humanities program focusing on visual arts.
