An Exploratory Study of Grit’s Factor and Differences in Gender and Age

본 연구에서는 그릿을 구성하는 흥미유지, 노력지속의 문항이 각 요인을 어떻게 반영하고 있는지 탐색하였으며, 이어 성별, 학교급에 대한 측정동일성을 검증하고 마지막으로 성별, 연령에 따라그릿 요인의 수준이 달라지는가를 알아보았다. 초·중·고등학생과 대학생 4977명의 자료에 대해 탐색적 구조방정식 모형(ESEM)과 확장된 다중지표-다중원인(MIMIC) 모형을 적용하여 분석하였으며다양한 모형을 확인적 요인분석(CFA)과 ESEM을 통해 비교한 결과 ESEM 방식이 보다 좋은 적합도 지수를 나타냈다. 또한 ESEM을 통해 한 문항이 모든 요인에 적재될 수 있도록 제약을 완화한결과 요인 간 문항의 중첩이 나타나고 있음을 교차적재량을 통해 확인하였다. 측정동일성 검증 결과 성별에서는 절편동일성, 학교급에서는 측정동일성까지 확보되었다. 마지막으로 확장 모형에서 그릿 요인에 대한 성별, 연령(선형과 비선형), 성별과 연령의 상호작용 효과를 알아본 결과 성차는 노력지속에서만 나타났으며 남학생이 여학생보다 높았다. 연령이 높아짐에 따라 흥미유지와 노력지속은 모두 감소하지만 흥미유지의 경우 특정 시기 이후에 다시 증가하는 추세를 보일 것으로 예상할수 있었다.

This study aims to explore the factor structure of grit (consistency of interest and perseverance of effort) and test the measurement invariance for gender and the school level. It also investigates whether the level of grit varies depending on gender and age. The data from 4,977 elementary, middle, high school students and college students were used for analysis with the exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) and multiple-indicator multiple-cause (MIMIC) model. Comparisons made between the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and ESEM displayed that the latter had better fit indices. By allowing cross-loadings and all items to be estimated in the grit scale, the ESEM showed there was an overlap between factors and items appeared. In the measurement invariance test, strong invariance was verified for gender while weak invariance was verified for the school level. Finally, the effects of gender, linear age, quadratic age, and gender×age interactions on the grit factor were examined using MIMIC model. Results showed that gender differences were only found in perseverance of effort with male students scoring higher than female students. As the age increases, both consistency of interest and perseverance of effort decreased, however consistency of interest could rise again after a certain period of time.
