인류의 역사에서 사회, 경제, 문화적으로 심오한 변화와 진보를 이루게 한 새로운 아이디어나 기술을 범용기술이라 볼 수 있다. 컴퓨터와 디지털 정보통신 기술은 인간의 정신력을 무한히 확장시키는 제2의 기계혁명을 촉발하고 있다. 새롭게 전개되는 4차 산업혁명의 시대에 사용될 주요 범용기술들은 어떠한 것들이며, 인류 문명에 어떤 변화를 몰고 올 것인가? 본 고찰을 통하여 대략 6가지의 중요한 이슈를 전망해보았다. 로봇 기술, 무인 자동차, 드론, 사물 인터넷, 가상 현실, 3D 프린팅 등은 4차산업혁명 시대의 가장 중요한 범용기술로 활용될 것이다. 4차 산업혁명의 시대에 인류는 어떻게 대처해야 할까? 4차 산업혁명은 지능적 기계의 출현을 의미하며, 인간은 인간만이 할 수 있는 역할을 찾는 것이 필요하다. 새로운 혁명이 지향하는 새로운 사회 변혁을 이해하고 이에 따른 인간 정체성의 정립이 중요할 것이다. 기계의 시대를 살아가는 인간은 암묵지에 주목하여야 한다. 인간은 기계와 경쟁할 필요가 없다. 기계와 협력하여야 한다.

New ideas or techniques that have led to profound changes and advances in society, economy and culture can be seen as general-purpose technologies. Computers and digital information and communication technologies are triggering a second mechanical revolution that will limit the mental power of human beings. What are the major general-purpose technologies that will be used in the new era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and what will bring about the changes in human civilization? Robot technology, unmanned vehicles, drones, the Internet of Things, virtual reality and 3D printing will be used as the most important general-purpose technologies in the era of the 4th industrial revolution. The 4th industrial revolution means the emergence of intelligent machines, and humans need to find roles that only humans can play. It will be important to understand the new social transformation that the new revolution pursues and to establish human identity accordingly. People living in the age of machines should pay attention to whether they are implicit. Man does not need to compete with machines.
