렘브란트의 <천사와 씨름하는 야곱>에 대한 감상과 재해석

Appreciation and Reinterpretation on Rembrandt s <Jacob Wrestling with the Angel>

이 연구는 렘브란트의 작품 <천사와 씨름하는 야곱>에 나타난 그의 성서해석학적 특징들을 분석하고 평가한 연구이다. 그는 이 그림에서 그의 후반기 작품에서 즐겨 사용하던 ‘명암대조법’을 사용하였다. 이 기법으로 그는 배경을 일체의 묘사 없이 다만 진한 갈색으로 처리함으로써 야곱과 천사의 씨름을 선명하게 클로즈업하였다. 동시에 같은 기법으로 천사와 야곱을 극명하게 대조한다. 그가 그린 천사는 안에서부터 나오는 빛으로 밝게 빛나지만 야곱은 배경색으로 스며드는 홍갈색 의 옷을 입었다. 천사의 얼굴은 빛나지만 야곱의 얼굴은 어둡다. 이것은 렘브란트의 관심이 야곱보다 성서가 끝까지 가리고 있는 천사에게 있음을 나타낸다. 그가 묘사한 천사와 야곱의 얼굴은 그 장면이 한창 씨름이 진행 중인 순간이 아니라 오히려 야곱이 자신을 돌아보며 회개하고 천사는 그런 야곱을 보호하는 순간임을 나타낸다. 이것은 그가 이 천사를 단지 피조물 이상으로 이해하였음을 의미한다. 그러나 그의 그림에서 그가 이 천사의 정체를 ‘여호와의 사자’로 인식하였는지를 확인할 단서는 없다.

This study aims to analyze and evaluate the biblical hermeneutic features which appear in Rembrandt’s work <Jacob Wrestling with an Angel>. In this painting, he used the ‘method of contrast between light and darkness,’ which he applied in his later works. With this technique, he made a clear close-up of the wrestling between Jacob and the angel by treating the background in a dark brown color without any elaboration. At the same time, the technique is used to sharply contrast the angel and Jacob. The angel he painted shines brightly with light from within, but Jacob’s cloth is in a reddish brown color that permeates the background. The angel’s face is bright, but Jacob’s face is dark. This indicates that Rembrandt’s concern is focused on the angel whom the text tries to hide. The faces of the angel and Jacob he portrayed indicate that the scene is not a moment in which a wrestling is in progress, but rather the moment when Jacob repents and the angel protects Jacob. This depiction suggests that Rembrandt understood the angel to be more than just a creature. However, in this painting, there is no indication to confirm whether he recognized the identity of this angel as the ‘angel of YHWH.’
