이수광(李&#30559;光)의 <지봉유설(芝峯類說)>에서 보는 기후와 기상에 대한 생각

The View of Climate and Weather in Jibongyuseol Written by Lee Su-Gwang

조선 중기의 문신인 이수광은 총 20권의 <지봉유설>을 남겼다. <지봉유설>은 182개의 범주에서 총 3,435개의 하위 조목을 일종의 백과사전적인 저서였다. 이 연구는 <지봉유설>에서 이수광이 언급한 기후와 기상에 대한 기록을 확인하여 그의 생각을 알아보는 것이 목적이었다. 이수광은 중국 고전이나 명의 저서로부터 기후나 기상에 관한 지식을 습득하고, 나름대로 해석을 덧붙였다. 특이한 기상 현상을 목격하고 상세한 기록을 남겼다. 외국의 기후는 우리나라와 다름을 지적했다. 이수광의 기후나 기상에 대해서 해석은 전통적인 유교에서 벗어나지 않는 경향을 보였다. 일부 현상에 대해서는 근거를 제시하여 독특한 자신의 해석을 덧붙이기도 했다. 이수광은 기후와 기상에 대해 나름대로 기사를 수집하고 해석을 덧붙인 선구적인 학자로 평가할 수 있다.

Lee Su-Gwang, who was a scholar on middle of the Joseon Dynasty, has written Jibongyuseol. These books (20 volumes) were a kind of encyclopedic book with a total of 3,435 items in 182 categories. The purpose of this study was to find out his thoughts by checking records of climate and weather mentioned by Lee Su-Gwang in Jibongyuseol. He acquired knowledge about weather and climate from Chinese classics and books of currently Ming-China and added his own interpretations. He witnessed unusual weather events and had made a detail records. He pointed out the climate of foreign countries is different from that of Joseon. Lee Su-Gwang’s interpretation of weather and climate showed a tendency not to deviate from the traditional Confucianism. However, for some phenomena of climate and weather, he added his own unique interpretation that provided evidence. Lee Su-Gwang could be evaluated as a pioneering scholar who collected articles and added interpretations on weather and climate.
