본고는 태암(笞巖) 이주(李輈, 1556-1604)의 학문정신과 그 양상을 실천적 관점에 입각하여 고찰해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이주는 퇴계학(退溪學)과 남명학(南冥學) 양자 모두를 계승하고 있는 한강(寒岡) 정구(鄭逑)의 한강학(寒岡學)을 자신의 사상 속에 녹아내고 있다. 필자는 유학에서의 실천이라는 측면에 입각하여 이주의 학문정신을 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위한 구체적인 방법으로 이주의 심성수양 방법과 사회적 실천 양상으로 구분하여 그의 실천철학적 경향성을 살펴보고자 한다. 그는 특히 성리서를 토대로 한 심성수양론을 중시하였는데, 이는 정구가 경(敬) 사상을 중심으로 하는 마음 수양론의 영향을 받은 것이다. 그리고 이주는 경전 공부를 통한 이론 공부에만 매몰되어 있지 않고 자신의 삶 속에서 실현하고자 하였다. 그러한 일환으로 임진왜란이 발생했을 당시 적극적으로 의병활동에 참여하였으며, 평생을 독서와 강학, 후학 양성을 위해 끊임없이 노력하였다. 이러한 노력들로 인해 그는 퇴계학과 남명학뿐만 아니라 한강학까지 계승하여 평생을 유학 본연의 가치를 실천하고자 노력한 인물로 평가할 수 있다.
This study aims to explore Taeam(笞巖) Yi Ju(李輈)’s academic spirit and aspects in the perspective of practice. Yi Ju develops his thoughts in succession of Hangang Studies(寒岡學), which was also inherited from the Toegye Studies(退溪學) and Nammyeong Studies(南冥學). I would like to examine in the theory of Yi Ju’s academic spirit. So I would like to examine his tendency to practice philosophy by dividing it into mind and nature methods and social practice methods. In particular, he emphasized the theory of mind and nature based on the neo-confusian’ books, the basis for this was influenced by Jeong Gu(鄭逑)’ theory of Kyeong(敬). And he wanted to realize in his life, not just studying theory through scripture. As part of such efforts, he actively participated in righteous army activities during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, and continued to strive for reading, teaching, and training for his students throughout his life. Due to these efforts, he can be regarded as a person who has succeeded not only Toegye Studies and Nammyeong Studies but also Hangang Studies to practice the original values of original confucian.
