불상조각의 문화 교육적 이해

A Study of Buddhist Sculpture and Culture Education

오늘날 불상조각은 고급예술과 신앙의 대상으로 미술관 · 박물관, 사찰에만 존재하는 것이 아니라 그 벽을 넘어서서 예술가들에 의해 작품의 소재로 활용되기도 하고 상품화되어 판매되면서 대중화되고 공공화 되고 있다. 그런데 우리 생활주변에서 불상조각을 만나는 기회가 많아졌음에도 그것이 지닌 의미와 상징, 도상을 이해하는 것은 일반적으로 매우 낮다. 특히 초 · 중등학생들은 불상조각에 내재된 조형성과 상징성, 문화적 가치를 이해하는 것이 쉽지 않다. 불상조각이 갖고 있는 도상의 형식과 의미 그리고 백남준 작품에 등장하는 불상조각을 중심으로 문화교육으로서의 불상조각의 이해의 필요성에 대해 조명하며 세계화 다원화시대에 요구되는 문화교육의 중요성에 대해 논의한다. 오늘날의 시각문화 속에서 발견되어지는 불상조각에 대한 이해는 미시적 관점에서의 불상조각이 아니라 다원화 시대의 거시적이고 광의적인 문화의 시각에서 조형미를 지각하고 느끼며 함축하고 있는 의미와 상징성 등이 이해되어야 한다.

Now days, Buddhist sculpture is not only existed at museum or temple as high art but also many artists use them as materials for their artworks besides stores sold them out as merchandise or souvenir. Be honest with it, we have many way to meet the Buddhist sculpture in our daily lives. We are not quite sure how we understand the meaning and symbol of Buddhist sculpture. The understanding of Buddhist sculpture is somehow vague and ambiguous to us. In here, I discussed the necessity of understanding the Buddhist sculpture as a cultural education focused on the form and meaning of Buddhist sculpture in elementary and secondary schools. I also dealt with how Back Nam June s manipulate and apply it to his works and how it showed his identity as korean through it. The understanding of Buddhist sculpture find in today s visual culture needs to be focused on the meaning and enjoyment from the cultural view in broad sense and how we transferred the thoughts and ideas of Buddhist thoughts through the visual education in plural society.
