일상에서 의미의 실천이 강화되면서 문화는 오늘날 우리의 삶을 설명하는 핵심어가 되어가고 있다. 이러한 사회·문화적 변화를 토대로 등장한 시각문화교육은 대중문화를 포함한 일상의 시각이미지에 대한 교육적 관심을 포함하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 오늘날 쟁점이 되고 있는 시각문화교육에 대한 이해를 구체화하기 위하여 시각문화교육의 연구자들 중 한 사람인 프리드먼의 사상을 조명하였다. 그녀에게 시각문화라는 용어는 지금까지와는 다르게 시각 예술의 배경을 복원하여 그 내용을 심화하고, 대중예술과 순수예술간의 연계를 허용하여 그 형식을 확장한다는 것을 의미 한다. 또한 시각문화교육에서 교육은 개인적 행위를 넘어 사회·정치적 행위로서 정체성 형성과 민주화와 관련된다. 따라서 그녀의 시각문화교육은 탈맥락적 형식적으로 접근되었던 기존의 미술교육에서 맥락과 의미의 위치를 복원시키려는 노력이라고 할 수 있다. 이것은 단순히 미술 교육의 소재를 시각문화에서 찾는 것으로 실현되는 것이 아니므로 미술교육에 대한 시대적, 철학적, 역사적 요구에 대한 이해와 함께 현장 교육에서의 다양한 실천들을 위한 제도적 노력과 구체적 연구가 뒷받침되어야 한다.

So the ability to interpret and respond to global visual culture in a sophisticated manner is essential in the contemporary world. Visual Culture Art Education(VCAE) is emerged based on the social cultural changes, educational view to life s visual images including mass culture.This study is aimed at reviewing the kerry Freedman s Ideology and Methodology of art education for understanding of VCAE. She is a distinguished fellow of the national art education association and has served to positively reflect the changes of American society in art education. She s research focuses on the relationship of curriculum to society and culture. Recently, She has concentrated on student engagement with visual culture and postmodern conditions of education. And she emphasized that use of the term visual culture inherently provides context for the visual arts in its effects and points to the connections between popular and fine arts forms. This she s idea can promote the understanding VCAE and the changing in art education in Korea.
