“Never Underestimate the Importance of Local Knowledge” - Multiculturalism and Art Education

다문화주의는 다양한 문화들의 공존과 문화적 다양성의 유지를 옹호하는 의제로서, 이는 1970년대 이래 캐나다와 미국 같은 다인종 국가들에서 교육학, 특히 예술 교육 부문의 주요 논점으로 연구되어왔다. 다문화주의는 문화적 차이에 대한 인정이라는 것이 일반적인 이해이지만, 이 신조어의 골자는 문화적 차이에 대한 이해이며, 따라서 단순한 인정을 뛰어넘는 그 이상의 노력이 필요하다. 이처럼 문화적 차이에 대한 이해가 다문화주의의 궁극적인 목적이라면, 다문화주의에 대한 논의에서는 문화상대주의에 대한 고찰이 반드시 필요하다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 문화상대주의의 역사적 배경과 이론적 개념들을 면밀하게 검토하였다.

Multiculturalism is the agenda for the coexistence of diverse cultures and the maintenance of cultural diversity. It has been a main issue in Pedagogy, especially art education, since 1970s in many multiethnic countries like Canada and the U. S.. The tenet of multiculturalism is generally understood as its approval of cultural differences, but the gist of it, I argue, lies in the understanding of them, so we need to make one or more steps forward than mere approval. For this, theory of cultural relativism is thoroughly examined: its historical background and theoretical concepts. Finally, some implications of multiculturalism and cultural relativism for art education in Korea are suggested in conclusion.
