도슨트(docent)는 박물관이나 미술관 전시실을 방문한 관람객들의 이해를 돕기위해 작품과 작가에 대한 설명을 해주는 안내자를 의미한다. 박물관이나 미술관을 찾은 어린이들에게 시각적 해독력을 개발하고, 미적 체험 활동을 내면화하도록 도와주기 위해서 어린이 전문 도슨트가 필요하다. 미술관을 찾은 어린이들이 어린이전문 도슨트와의 의사소통을 통해서 전시된 작품에 대한 새로운 것을 알고 느끼게 되는 미적 체험을 내면화 시킬 수 있어야 한다. 이런 과정 속에서 어린이들이 미술문화에 관심을 가지게 되고 삶 속에서 향유할 수 있는 문화적 소양을 길러지는 것이다. 이 글에서는 박물관·미술관에서 어린이 전문 도슨트의 필요성, 어린이 전문 도슨트의 역할과 자질 및 양성을 중심으로 살펴보았다.
To be ready to face the era of culture and advance Korea to a cultural nation with sophisticated aesthetic taste, it is required to activate museum education and art gallery education. Art education is not to train creators of art culture, but to train beneficiaries of art culture who are capable of enjoying art and utilizing it in life. Thus, it is increasingly important to provide museum and art gallery education which is intimately related with daily living and can be enjoyed in everyday life. Accordingly, a service of docent should be offered to the major players in the future, children, who visit a museum or art gallery, so that they are interested in art culture and learn to enjoy it in daily life. A docent for children is a guide for a large number of children visiting a museum or art gallery, who explains art works and artists to help children understand art. We need a docent specialized in guiding children in order to help them develop visual interpretation skills of art works and internalize the aesthetic experience. Regarding roles of a docent for children, first, a docent guides children in the exhibition and explains art works, second, provides explanation that is appropriate to the level of children, third, answers the questions about art works or artists to satisfy the curiosity of children, and fourth, provides them with a new aesthetic experience and opportunity to think. Regarding qualifications of a docent for children, first, a docent needs to have understanding of the trend of the modern art education, second, professional knowledge of art, third, ability to transform the knowledge into educational version, fourth, understanding of the steps of children s development on appreciation of art works, and fifth, communication skills. In the era of culture, a docent specialized in children should be delegated in museums and art galleries so as to educate people with cultural sophistication. Consequently, museum and art gallery education is made more actively. Even though there is a course to train docents for adults, there is no course yet to train docents for children. A course to train docents who specialize in guiding children should be established immediately to produce qualified docents whose service is offered to the future players of the culture, children, visiting museums and art galleries.
