Living in a multi cultural society has caused to lose clear identities of nationalities and ethnicities because of their complexities. This loss has brought the needs to recognize and reevaluate traditional cultures to develop people s critical thinking and capabilities of value judgments in various cultural identities. In fact, we have ignored to recognize traditional culture in the Westernization process that the importance of unique values in our traditional culture has been de-evaluated. To solve this situation, education should play the central role to have student recognize and perceive our traditional cultures. Especially, art education should be at the center to reevaluate disappearing traditional culture, and should make endless efforts to reproduce, reinterpret, and re-discover our traditional culture. Moreover, with certain systemic instruction, art education should start in the elementary school where children construct their basic comprehensions of cultural knowledge. However, even though Korean National Curriculum emphasizes traditional culture in art education, it does not inform specific guidance for the classroom teaching and learning. Therefore, this study attempts to develop a workbook to help effective teaching and learning traditional art. There are six important characters of using this workbook. First, this workbook informs detail guidance for children s artistic experiences to develop the self-directive learning. Second, it helps children to perform appreciation of various art forms with contextual and comparative approaches. Third, through implementing this workbook, students can learn traditional cultures by their different capabilities. Fourth, it has certain elements for teaching guidance to connect between grades in various genres and suggests children to select certain art forms for learning traditional arts. Fifth, implementing this workbook stimulates children s interests of traditional arts and makes them to have the self-pride of traditional arts. Lastly, it can be valuable information to create new cultural identities for students.
