Teaching Enviroment through Painting Water in Elementary Art Class

The subject of this thesis is environmental education, and its purpose is to teach the importance of correctly dealing with painting water in art class. Our nation is categorized as one which lacks water, and the quality of our environment is getting worse day by day. Schools should teach the importance of properly dealing with the water, in the curriculum of social studies, science, and philosophy classes. Art education can also contribute to emphasizing the importance of water by including environmental education in the art class. To achieve this purpose, this thesis examines the recent trend of studies on water performed by natural science, humanities, and oriental philosophy studies. Then, it suggests a method for students to use water as a subject in painting class. By painting water in class, students will investigate the image of water based on Korean traditional attitudes toward nature, and come to understand the importance of water. This is a new teaching method that is very different from former methods, which address only drawing or carving in art class. This method represents interdisciplinary education that combines social studies, science, and environmental education all together.
