A Study on Design Education at the School Attached to Gyeongseong Teachers College : Focused on Design Teaching Plan published in Chosun Education Research

The purpose of this study is to clarify the state of design education at the school attached to Gyeongseong Teachers College focused on Design Teaching Plan among teaching plans for the department of drawing published in Chosun Education Research (1928-1941) and to find a lead to the real state of design education in elementary schools under the rule of Japanese imperialism. It was found that, while design education before the 1930s was mainly concentrated on creating patterns, design education at the school attached to Gyeongseong Teachers College in the late 1930s included poster design and decorative character design as shown in teaching plans for the department of drawing. Such results of this study suggest that part of design education in those days is linked to contemporary design education that is characteristically alive in children s life and, at the same time, has to attract people s attention even if it goes beyond the boundary of the domain of beauty. This study is expected to play a part in defining the structure of the history of Korean modern design education, which has been neglected.
