중학생 시민의식의 종단적 변화와 영향요인 분석 : 학부모와 교사의 학교참여 효과를 중심으로

Analysis of Longitudinal Growth and Influencing Factors in Citizenship of Middle School Students : the effect of parents and teachers engagement in school

본 연구는 생태학적 체계 이론의 관점에서 학생의 주요 사회화 대행자인 학부모와 교사의 학교참여가 학생의 시민의식 발달에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석자료는 경기교육종단연구의 4차~6차년도(2015년~2017년) 중학생 자료이며, 학생 시민의식의 종단적 변화와 영향요인을 밝히기에 적합한 다층성장모형을 적용하였다. 먼저 기초모형 분석결과, 중학생 시민의식 평균은 연령이 증가함에 따른 뚜렷한 증감 추세를 보이지 않았으나 하위요인별로는 서로 다른 양상을 보였으며, 학생 개인별로 시민의식 초기값과 기울기에 유의한 차이가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이에 조건모형을 적용하여 분석한 결과, 학부모의 학교참여는 자녀의 시민의식 변화율에 유의한 영향이 없었으나, 교사의 학교참여는 학생 시민의식 변화율에 유의한 정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 보다 구체적으로 시민의식 하위요인별 분석결과, 학부모의 학교참여는 자녀의 공동체의식 변화율에 유의한 정적 영향이 있으며, 교사의 학교참여는 학생의 참여·개방의식과 윤리의식 변화율에 유의한 정적 영향이 있었다. 그러나 교사의 학교참여는 학생의 공동체의식 변화율에 유의한 부적 영향이 있는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 학교참여 과정에서 교사의 업무 부담이 높아짐에 따라 학생-교사 간 상호작용과 학생 지도가 상대적으로 소홀해지며 나타나는 결과로 해석된다. 이상의 분석을 통해 본 연구는 학생의 시민의식 형성에 있어 학부모와 교사의 역할모델 효과를 실증적으로 확인하였으며, 민주시민교육에 교육 공동체 내 다양한 구성원의 역동적인 상호작용을 적절히 활용할 필요가 있음을 밝혔다. 그러나 본질적인 교육 활동이 소홀해지지 않는 범위 내에서 학부모와 교사의 학교참여가 이루어질 필요가 있으며, 참여의 적정 수준에 대해서는 향후 보다 신중한 논의가 요구됨을 제언하였다.

From the perspective of ecological system theory, this study empirically analyzed the effect of parents and teachers engagement as the agents of socialization on the students citizenship development. We use middle school students data from the fourth to sixth years(2015-2017) of GEPS and apply a multilevel growth model suitable for clarifying longitudinal changes and citizenship influencing student factors. First, the unconditional model analysis shows that middle school students citizenship does not have any significant time trends, and the initial value and slope of citizenship are significantly varying between students. Also, the conditional model analysis shows that both parents and teachers’engagement in school substantially affect students citizenship growth. More specifically, teachers engagement in school involves students participation, openness, and ethics. However, teachers engagement in school has a significant adverse effect on students community consciousness. Through the analysis, this study empirically confirms the effect of parents and teachers engagement in school as the role model in students citizenship development. However, we need further discussion on the appropriate level and scope of various subjects engagement without harming essential education activities.
