김효명 교수의 칸트 인과론 해석에 대한 검토

An Examination of Prof. Hyo-Myung Kim’s Kant on Causation

본고는 김효명이 바라보는 칸트의 인과론을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 국내영국경험론 연구의 기초를 마련한 저술인 『영국경험론』 제7장 제4절 논의를 통해 김효명은 칸트가 흄의 인과론에 맞서 제시한 인과론의 핵심을 재구성해 살피는가운데 흄에 대한 칸트의 진단은 결국 한계를 지닐 수밖에 없다는 결론에 이른다. 이러한 평가의 온당성 여부는 흄의 인과론에 대한 칸트의 논증을 먼저 김효명의눈을 통해 구조화한 후에 칸트의 논증에 대한 김효명의 비판을 체계적으로 살피는과정을 거치면서 판별될 것이다. 따라서 본고는 다음과 같은 순서로 진행될 것이다. 첫째, 흄의 인과론에 대한 칸트의 비판적 대응을 김효명이 제시한 해석을 따라서기술한다. 둘째, 김효명이 일관되게 지적하는 칸트의 인과론에 내재한 문제점이 무엇인지 파헤친다. 셋째, 칸트의 인과론에 대해 김효명의 비판이 갖는 의의와 한계를 살핀다. 필자의 해석이 옳다면, 칸트의 인과론을 공격하는 김효명의 논증은 몇몇 중대한 칸트적 사유를 대체로 간과한 채로 비판을 꾸미기 때문에 좀 더 보완될필요가 있다. 물론 그의 훌륭한 논의가 필자를 포함한 대다수의 독자들이 인과 문제에 보다 올바르게 접근하는 데 커다란 기여를 했음은 두말할 필요도 없지만 말이다.

The main aim of this paper lies in critically examining Prof. Hyo-Myung Kim’s Kant on causation. In Ch. 7, Sec. 4 of his book, British Empiricism, a monumental achievement of Korean British Empiricism scholarship, Kim argues, on the basis of his reconstruction of Kant’s argument for causation that purports to refute Hume’s theory of causation, that Kant’s diagnosis of Hume on causation is defective. Since this claim will be able to be justly evaluated only after going through Kim’s reconstruction and carefully exploring its critical details, this paper will proceed as follows. Firstly, following Kim’s reading, I present Kant’s critical response to Hume’s theory of causation. Secondly, I try to uncover the problems that Kim finds in Kant’s theory of causation. Thirdly, I appreciate the significance and limits of Kim’s criticism of Kant on causation. If what I have shown so far is right, Kim’s critical appraisal of Kant’s theory of causation is imperfect and requires some supplements in that it ignores several important Kantian points, although his masterful discussion has enormously contributed to the enhancement of the understanding of the problem of causation.
