A Qualitative Study on the Development of the Occupational and Educational Aspiration of Female Community College Students Majoring in Secretary-related Fields

The purpose of this study was to identify the development of the occupational and educational aspiration and to find variables which have effects on the developmental process of the occupational and educational aspiration of female community college students majoring in secretary-related fields. This qualitative study examined the developmental processes of the occupational and educational aspiration of ten female students via in-depth interviews and document review. The following conclusions are derived from this study. (1)Participants occupational aspirations at their elementary school days were influenced by their educators or relatives, but those at their high school days were effected by peers or GPA. (2)All participants reported that attending college was a goal they never thought to question. The reasons that participants chose secretary-related fields as their major were possibilities of taking a job after graduation, GPA, and work experience in service fields. (3)Parents appeared to have little influence on the development of aspiration of the students who participated in this study. (4)Siblings more often served as sources of emotional support and encouragement than as sources of specific career guidance. (5)Peers in high school have a substantial influence on the occupational aspiration of participants. (6)Encouragements from professor influenced on the aspiration. However, nine of these ten participants did not report an memory of receiving meaningful support or encouragement from a teacher in either middle school or high school.
