A Study on Improving Distance Teacher Training Focused on Problems in Developing and Operating Courses of Representative Cases

The purpose of this study was to analyze the current status of distance teacher training in Korea and to make suggestion for its improvement. To analyze their current status, two representative cases were analyzed in terms of their course development and its operation and responses from their students and operators. Based on the problems shown by the representative cases, it was suggested the ways to promote distance teacher training from the aspects of its regulations and rules, the service providers and users. First, it is recommendable for the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development to support the training centers opening rather specialized courses for which less teachers will register than for general ones. It is also important to re-establish student performance evaluation systems, to increase training time per day, to simplify the procedure of reporting training results and to increase the ratio of tutors to students. On the other hand, service providers need to make an effort to produce high quality content by supporting faculty members and by securing enough staff members like instructional designers. It is expected to activate interactions between tutors and students and between students by providing learning activities requiring interpersonal communication. It is also necessary to establish standards for selecting and using delivery strategies, and to build a quality assurance system by itself and/or collaboratively among the training centers. Finally service users are expected to be more responsible for their own learning and to spend as much time and effort as they have done in face-to-face environment.
