A Survey on the Vocational Key Competence of Nurses

Purpose: This study aimed to understand the level of vocational key competence and educational needs of nurses working in hospitals in Gwangju. Methods: A descriptive research design was employed to examine 148 clinical nurses using a questionnaire developed by Joo, Park, and Jin (2010). The questionnaire consisted of 69 questions rated on a five-point scale with eight competence factors (problem solving, basic mathematics, resource and information technology utilization, communication, interpersonal relationship, understanding of organization and culture, self-management, and career development). Results: (1) The average level of vocational key competence was 3.51 points, with the results of individual factors as follows: communication (3.75), career development (3.70), self-management (3.64), interpersonal relationship (3.64), problem solving (3.46), resource and information technology utilization (3.31), understanding of organization and culture (3.27), and basic mathematics (3.19). (2) Nurses’ educational need (demand) for vocational key competence was high, with an average of 3.83 points: self-management (3.98), career development (3.98), communication (3.96), interpersonal relationship (3.85), problem solving (3.77), resource and information technology utilization (3.71), understanding of organization and culture (3.70), and basic mathematics (3.53). (3) The analysis of sub-categories revealed that the most important factor was professional ethics. (4) Significant results were obtained for the over-41 age group, married nurses, and clinical career. Conclusion: The results of this study can be used as basic data for developing an improved nursing curriculum.
