지역기관 아동을 대상으로 한 대학교 연계 영어교육봉사 사례분석

A case study of English Teaching Program by college student volunteers at a Child Welfare Institution

본 연구의 목적은 지역아동시설에 있는 아동들에게 인근 대학교의 대학생, 대학원생, 교수 등의 구성원들이 영어를 지도하는 프로그램을 만들어 시행하고 그 과정 및 내용을 보고하는 데 있다. 프로그램 개발을 위하여 사전에 지역의 아동보호시설의 담당자와 몇 차례 만나 면 담을 실시하였으며, 그 결과 학습대상자는 미취학아동 및 초등학교 저학년으로 결정하였다. 근교에 위치한 K대학교에서 자원하는 이들을 중심으로 대학생 및 대학원생들은 일대일로 | 일주일에 1회씩 아동과 만나 영어를 지도하였고, 대학교 소속 교수는 십여명의 아동들을 모 아 수업을 진행하였다. 5개월 정도 진행 중에 참가한 대학생과 대학원생, 아동들을 대상으로 면담 및 질문지를 통해 이에 대한 반응 및 제안점을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 아이들은 영어향상 에 대하여 긍정적으로 평가하며 흥미 있는 활동을 계속 원하였으며, 일대일지도에 참여한 학생들은 지도활동에 보람을 느낀다고 응답하였다. 시설 직원과의 면담을 통해서는 아이들 의 학습수준이 향상되고 있고 아이들도 좋아하는 활동으로 고마워하였으며, 성실하고 지속 할 수 있는 지도활동이 되기를 희망함을 알 수 있었다. 그 외 나타난 제안점 등을 통하여 향 후 지역의 기관에서 대학교와 연계하여 상호간에 도움이 되는 다양한 프로그램 구성하는 데 에 시사점을 줄 수 있을 것으로 본다.

The purpose of this study is to report and share the experiences of Korean college members including students, professors, to implement community-based English teaching program. In order to develop the program, several pre-interviews were carried out with staffs at a selected child welfare institution and, subsequently, lower-level elementary and pre-school children were chosen as a target population for the program. For this purpose, seven college students taught English for young elementary and preschool children one by one, and professors opened an English class for them in the child welfare institution. During the implementation of the program, the college students who volunteered to teach, children participated in the program, and the staff of the institution were all interviewed about their teaching or learning experiences. The results indicated that the college students found the work to be very rewarding, and children participated in the program reported that they found the study helpful and wanted to participate in the fun activities. Likewise, feedback from the staff of the institution indicates that the learners are improving their English skills and they enjoyed studying with college students. Finally, a number of suggestions for the further development of community English teaching programs were stated.
