The Meaning of Subject Integration in the Light of the Concept of ‘Voice of Poetry’

이 글은 교과통합의 의미를 오우크쇼트의 ‘시의 목소리’ 개념에 비추어 해석하는 데 목적이 있다. 오우크쇼트는 시의 목소리에 대비되는 것으로서 실제와 과학의 목소리를 들고 있다. 이 두 종류의 목소리에 기초해서 교과의 통합을 두 가지로 구분할 수 있다. 하나는 실제와 과학의 목소리에 의한 통합, 다른 하나는 시의 목소리에 의한 통합이다. 전자는 문제사태를 중심으로 교과를 통합하는 것으로서 세계를 개선해야 할 대상으로 파악하고 다양한 교과 지식을 이러한 문제 해결의 수단으로 취급하는 것이다. 실제에 의한 통합에서는 대화가 사라지고 논증과 유용성이 중요한 덕목이 된다. 반면, 시의 목소리에 의한 통합에서는 다양한 지식과 목소리가 존재한다는 것 자체가 중요하다. 다양한 지식이 존재함으로써 대화가 가능하며, 대화는 세계를 그 자체로 이해하고 관조하고 향유하도록 하는 일이다. 다양한 지식들은 각각 고유한 목소리와 어법으로 세계, 인간, 삶에 대해 발언하며, 정해진 기착지가 없는 대화를 이어나간다. 시적 통합에서는 이처럼 다양한 목소리가 어우러져서 대화를 나누는 것 자체에 의의를 둔다.

This article aims to interpret the meaning of subject integration in the light of Oakeshott’s concept of ‘voice of poetry’. The integration of subjects can be divided into two. One is integration by the voices of practical activity and science, and the other is by the voice of poetry. The former is to integrate subjects around a problem situation, grasp the world as an object to be improved, and treat various subject knowledge as a means of solving such problems. Several subjects are dominated by the voices of practical activity and science, and in this integration, dialogue disappears, and argumentation and usefulness become important virtues. On the other hand, in the integration by the voice of poetry, it is important that there are various knowledge and voices. Conversation is possible because of the existence of various knowledge, and conversation is the activity of understanding, contemplating and enjoying the world as it is. Various knowledges each speak about the world, human, and life with their own voice and language, and they continue conversations without a set stop. Dialogue is a play in that there are no predetermined goals or goals to be reached. In poetic integration, such diverse voices harmonize and communicate with each other.
