플라톤 「국가」의 동굴 비유에 나타난 교육의 목적

본 연구는 플라톤 「국가」에 제시된 동굴의 비유를 단계별로 나누어 상세히 고찰해봄으로써 동굴의 비유에서 드러나는 교육의 목적이 무엇인가를 탐색해보고자 한다. 동굴의 비유는 「국가」 전체에 걸쳐서 제시된 최고의 수호자가 되기 위한 교육의 과정과 그 어려움을 여실하게 보여준다. 또한 동굴 밖으로 나간 사람이 동굴로 다시 회귀하여 수인들에게 좋은 것의 형식을 보도록 독려하는 모습은 가르치는 사람으로서의 교사의 전형을 나타낸다고 볼 수 있다. 동굴의 비유에서의 교사는 자신의 가르치는 행위를 통하여 사람들로 하여금 ‘좋은 것의 형식’을 인식할 수 있도록 이끄는 사람이며 그 결과 인간다운 삶을 살도록 안내하는 사람이다. 교사의 가르침을 통해 최고 수호자를 기르기위한 교육이 올바르게 이루어질 때 그 국가는 올바른 환경으로 둘러싸이고 그 속에서 사는 개개인은 자신이 모방하고 있는 그 대상의 본질을 인식하여 점차 그것과 닮아갈 수 있게 된다. 결국, 플라톤의 「국가」에 제시되어 있는 교육의 목적은 사람들로 하여금 ‘좋은 것의 형식’을 인식하게 하여 인간다운 삶을 살아가게 하는 데에 있다. 동굴의 비유는 이 일이 얼마나 어려운 일이며 이 어려운 일이 다름 아닌 ‘교사의 일’이라는 점을 보여주고 있다.

This study explores the aim of education presented in Plato s allegory of the cave, from The Republic, by examining each stage in the allegory of the cave in detail. The allegory of the cave intensively illustrates the process of education required of a philosopher-king presented throughout the Republic, using many forms of symbolism, and the escaped prisoner who returned to the cave and tried to free the other prisoners presents the difficulty of teaching. A teacher guides students to realize the Form of the Good through his acts of teaching, which results in leading them to a good life. The successful of the leads the country surrounded by the virtuous environment in which each individual gradually recognizes the true nature of the philosopher-Kings he imitates and resembles them. In conclusion, the goal of education recommended by Plato is to help people acquire the knowledge of the Form of the Good and live a good life, and the allegory of the cave shows how difficult it is and that it is the roles of teachers.
