도덕적 생명향상의 필요성과 윤리적 쟁점

인류는 지구상에 등장한 이래 끊임없이 삶을 향상시켜 왔다. 문자의 발명은 인지 능력을 향상시켰고, 바퀴는 운송 능력을 향상시켰다. 이미 몸의 일부와도 같은 스마트폰을 통해 우리는 수많은 일을 하고 있다. 인류의 역사는 향상의 역사라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 그런데 최근 이러한 향상의 역사는 새로운 과학기술을 활용하여 인간의 몸과 마음을 직접 향상시키는 방향으로 나아가는 경향을 보이고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 과학기술을 통해 인간의 도덕성을 향상시킬 필요가 있다는 ‘도덕적 생명향상’에 대한 주장이 제기되고 있다. 인간의 도덕 심리가 안고 있는 한계를 극복하기 위해 혹은 인류가 직면한 위기를 극복하기 위해 도덕적 생명향상이 필요하다는 주장이 제기되고 있다. 하지만 도덕적 생명향상은 ‘타락할 자유’를 침해할 뿐만 아니라, ‘도덕적 이해’의 중요성을 간과하고, 도덕적 행위에 있어서 ‘도덕적 의도’의 중요성을 과소평가한다는 비판을 받는다.

Mankind have been constantly pursuing improving their lives since they appeared on Earth. The invention of letters improved cognitive ability and the wheels improved transport skills. Also, with a smart phone that is a part of the body, we can do a lot of things. It is no exaggeration to say that the history of mankind is a history of enhancement. Recently, however, the history of this enhancement has tended to flow toward improving the human body and mind directly by utilizing new science and technology. In addition, There are claims of ‘moral bio-enhancement’ that human morality needs to be improved through science and technology. It is argued that moral bio-enhancement is necessary to overcome the limitations of human moral psychology or to overcome the urgent crisis faced by mankind. However moral bio-enhancement is criticized for not only infringing on human ‘freedom to fall’, but also overlooking the importance of moral understanding and the importance of moral intent .
