인간 정서의 역사적 발달과정에 대한 이해: 서양 중세를 중심으로

An Understanding of the Historical Development of Human Emotions in the Middle Ages

이 글에서 밝히고자 하나의 질문은, ‘사람의 마음속에는 무엇이 있는가?’ 하는 것이다. 이 질문에 대한 대답을 찾기 위하여 본 연구는 중세인의 마음의 역동적 측면을 살펴봄으로써 인간 정서의 역사적 발달과정을 이해하는 방법을 취한다. 그렇게 함으로써 사람의 마음은 인간의 종족적 삶과 문화를 통하여 오랜 세월 동안 형성되어 온 역사적 개념이라는 주장을 밝히고, 이러한 주장의 교육학적 의의를 드러내고자 한다. 이를 위하여 몇몇 뛰어난 중세 문화사가의 통찰을 바탕으로 인간 정서의 발달에 유의미한 배경을 제공했던 중세 라틴 그리스도교 사상의 특징을 분석하고, 종교적·예술적 상징들로 이루어진 중세 특유의 삶의 방식이 중세인의 정서 발달에 작용한 기제가 무엇인지 살펴본다. ‘듣는 삶’으로 요약되는 중세인들의 삶의 방식은 수도원제도를 창안해내었고, 천여 년에 걸친 수도원제도를 통하여 발달해온 종교적 수행은 인간의 마음속에 감추어져 있는 ‘신성’—사랑—이 생생하게 살아나도록 일깨워주었다. 이것은 인간의 진정한 선이 무엇인지를 찾아가는 과정에 요구되는 인간의 위대한 열정과 노력의 결실을 생생하게 보여주는 역사적 증거에 해당한다. 수도원주의에서 일깨우고자 하는 신적 정서는 한편으로 인간적 열정에 제약을 가하는 방해 세력이지만, 다른 한편으로 그것은 인간적 열정과 결코 적대적인 관계에 있는 것이 아니라 인간의 열정을 정련한 결실에 해당한다는 것을 중세인들의 종교적 수행은 보여주고 있다.

The main question this paper attempts to answer is as follow: “What is in a person’s mind?” To find the answer to this question, this study takes a way to understand the historical development of human emotions by looking at the dynamic aspects of the mind of the Middle Ages. By doing so, the paper shows that the human mind is a historical product that was formed over centuries through tribal life and culture and reveals the pedagogical significance of this fact. Based on the insights of several outstanding medieval cultural historians, the paper analyzes the characteristics of medieval Latin Christian thought that provided a significant background for the development of human emotions and examines how the uniquely medieval way of life consisting of religious and aesthetic symbols influenced the medieval person’s emotional development. The medieval way of life, summarized as “listening life,” invented the monastic system, and religious practices developed through the millennium-long monastic system reminded us of the vividness of the “divinity”—love—that is hidden in the human mind. Monasticism shows that the divine passion to awaken in religious practice is on the one hand a deterrent power to human enthusiasm but on the other hand it is a refined fruit of human enthusiasm.
