‘진아(盡我)’ 정신으로 본<양사룡전(梁四龍傳)>의 입전의식

본고는 <양사룡전>의 구성과 내용상의 특징을 파악하고 저자의 입전의식을 규명하고자 한 것이다. <양사룡전>은 2,703자나 되는 긴 분량으로 구성과 내용에서 몇 가지 독특한 면모를 보인다. 첫째, <양사룡전>은 하늘과 인간 사이의 정당한 관계 정립에 대한 철학적 의론으로 시작되는데 이는 작품 전체를 통해 저자가 자신의 사유를 입전인물을 통해 입증해가는 장치로 기능한다. 둘째, <양사룡전>은 중첩된 서사 구성을 통해 양사룡의 효행을 강조하고 주제를 심화시킨다. 셋째, <양사룡전>은 다양한 삽화를 통해 주제를 확장시킨다. 이와 같은 구성상의 특징을 바탕으로 <양사룡전>은 내용과 주제의식에 있어서도 일반적인 효자전과는 다른 모습을 보인다. 효자전의 일반적인 주제가 효행의 계몽적 권면이라면 <양사룡전>은 양사룡의 효행을 서사의 시발점으로 삼아 선행, 의리로 주제를 확장해가면서 종국에는 하늘과 정당한 관계를 맺을 수 있는 바람직한 인간상의 문제를 제기한다. 그런데 <양사룡전>에 담긴 핵심적인 사유는 저자인 서귀 이기발의 의리론과 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 이기발의 의리론은 ‘마땅함’을 기준으로 몇 가지 양상으로 표출되는데 첫째는 부당한 일에 대해 ‘어찌 차마 그런 일을 하랴[那忍]’는 것이고, 둘째는 ‘해야 할 것과 할 수 있는 것을 마땅히 하라[當爲所當, 當爲所能]’는 것이며, 셋째는 ‘자신의 할 도리를 다 하라[盡我]’는 것이다. <양사룡전>에서 양사룡이 자기가 천한 사람이라고 해서 하늘에 대한 보은을 모른 체 해선 안 된다는 것은 ‘나인(那忍)’과 연결되고, 스스로 마땅히 해야 할 바를 하겠다는 다짐은 ‘당위소당(當爲所當)’의 정신과 연결되며, 오이를 정성껏 가꾸어 지친 행인들의 갈증을 풀어준 선행은 자신이 할 도리를 다하는 ‘진아(盡我)’와 연결된다. 이렇게 볼 때 서귀 이기발은 <양사룡전>을 통해 하늘이 품부해준 바를 따라 마땅히 할 수 있고 마땅히 해야 할 일을 실천하는 인간상의 확립하고자 하였다. 요컨대, 서귀는 <양사룡전>을 통해 ‘盡我’의 실천자를 발견하고 그 가치를 확산하고자 했던 것이다.

This paper aims to identify the characteristics of the structure and contents, and the purpose of writing the Yang Sa-ryong’s story[<梁四龍傳>]. The results of the study are as follows. The Yang Sa-ryong’s story[<梁四龍傳>] is written by Seogwi Lee gibal[西歸 李起&#28001;(1602～1662)] The Yang Sa-ryong’s story[<梁四龍傳>] begins with a philosophical argument for the establishment of a legitimate relationship between heaven and man. This beginning is hard to see in other works. And this introduction serves as a device for the author to prove his reasons through a preconceived character throughout the work. The Yang Sa-ryong’s story[<梁四龍傳>] emphasizes Yang Sa-ryong s filial piety and deepen the various themes through the composition of overlapped narratives. The Yang Sa-ryong’s story[<梁四龍傳>] extends the subject through various inserted stories. This composition is different from the typical filial tale. So, unlike the general story of the filial piety simply encourages filial piety, this story focuses on what the ideal human figure looks like. The topic of the story is closely related to the thoughts of the author s righteousness. In conclusion, the author tried to establish a human figure who practices what he ought to do as the heaven gave it. In other words, the author tried to find a friend who did what he had to do through the story and tried to spread the justice he showed.
