인성 교육 교양 과목 원격 수업에서의 서양 고전 작품 활용

Application of western classic works in personality education courses on distance learning

본 연구의 목적은 대학생들을 위한 인성 교육 교양 과목 원격 학습에서 서양 고전 작품의 활용성을 살펴보고 그 효과를 논의하는 것이다. 최근 들어 많은 대학교들이 추상적이고 선언적인 관점의 인성 교육에서 탈피해 현대 사회에 반드시 필요한 기본역량을 함양하기 위한 윤리, 교양 과목을 개설하는 추세이다. 이러한 추세에 따라 새로이 개편되는 교양 프로그램에 있어 인문학 특히 영문학 작품을 통한 교양 과목 학습을 소개하고자 한다. 문학 작품 중에서도 서양 고전 작품은 시대를 넘어선 공감대를 형성하고 나(자신) 이외의 다른 사람들의 내러티브를 통해 나의 인생과 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향에 대한 실마리를 얻을 수 있게 한다. 따라서 교양 과목의 커리큘럼에 따른 문학 작품의 활용을 구분하고 이미 적용한 바 있는 문학 작품 활용 사례의 이점을 공유하면서, 단순한 인문학 학습이 아닌 인성 교육 교양 과목에서의 서양 고전 작품의 도입이 가져올 수 있는 긍정적 효과에 대해서 자세히 조명하고자 한다.

This study aims to discuss the application of western classic works in a personality education course on distance learning. These days several universities try to break the abstract and proclamatory tradition in the past and tend to open personality education courses in liberal arts which are needed to develop character competency in modern society. Following the trend, I would like to suggest and exemplify the distance learning with western classic works in newly reorganized personality education courses. Among all literary works, a classic forms a bond of timeless sympathy and helps to find a lead for one s life or a promising perspective. Therefore the study attempts to apply western classic works to a personality education course based on the curriculum and then shares education models and benefits including my latest experience upon distance learning during the first semester of 2020. Topics I deal with here are three: love and marriage, woman identity and understanding on aging and the old. Each topic will be presented with three major western literary pieces. For love and marriage, William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 116” will be introduced and applied to the topic. For woman identity, John Milton s Paradise Lost and for understanding on aging and the old, Cicero s De Senectute will be introduced and applied to the topic respectively. Ultimately this study will closely examine the positive effects that can be brought out by applying western classic works to personality education courses in liberal arts.
