장애관련동화의 번역 양상 고찰

A Study on the Translation of Children’s Stories of Disability

이 연구는 서구권에서 쓰인 장애관련동화의 한국어 번역 양상을 살펴보고자 하였다. 12권의 초등학생용 장애관련동화를 대상으로 제목, 표지, 장애범주 설명, 그리고 원작 도서에 비해 번역서에서만 나타난 시각적 장치와 텍스트를 찾아내어 분석하였다. 제목의 번역 양상을 보면, 장애인 주인공의 이름은 생략한 채 누나, 동생 등의 관계 호칭으로 표기하고, 장애인임을 분명하게 알 수 있도록 장애 범주명을 추가하여 번역하는 창작 전략을 사용하였다. 표지의 경우 대부분 원작의 표지를 그대로 사용하였으나 그렇지 않은 번역서도 있었는데, 이 경우 장애인이 등장한다는 것을 명백하게 알 수 있도록 창작하였다. 그리고 원작 도서에는 없는 시각적 장치인 문장 부호(……, - )를 삽입하여 장애아동의 말투를 어눌한 것처럼 표현하였다. 결론적으로 장애관련동화의 번역 과정에서 관련 종사자들의 장애인관이 드러날 수 밖에 없다는 점을 제시하였으며, 장애인식개선을 목적으로 출간되었지만 번역, 편집, 홍보 과정에서 관련인들의 장애인관에 따라 오히려 장애에 대한 고정관념이나 편견이 더 강화될 수 있는 위험성에 대해 논의하였다.

The current study examined the Korean translation of twelve children’s stories of disability written in the West. More specifically, this paper analyzed their titles, covers, and disability diagnosis name, and compared the visual devices and texts that are only found in the translation to those in the original books. In the translation of the title, the disabled character was marked as someone s sister or brother without being directly revealed. In addition, the disability diagnosis name was added to make it clear that the main character is disabled. Most of the covers used the original cover, but some did not. In the latter, the cover was created to make it clear that disabled people appear in the books. Translated texts include visual devices such as ellipsis (……) or hyphen (－) that are not found in the original book. These visual devices were frequently used to express the speech of disabled people as if they were unable to speak clearly. In conclusion, the translation process of children s stories about disabilities revealed the disability perspective of those who work in the business. These translation books were published for the purpose of improving the awareness of the disabled, but they may increase the dangers of further strengthening stereotypes and prejudices about the disabled.
