원형(原型)적 산물로서의 <뱀> 상징

상징은 우리가 알 수 없는 비밀스럽고 모호한 무언가를 내포하고 있다. 상징은 정확하게 정의되거나 완벽하게 설명 될 수 없는‘무의식’의 측면을 지닌 상(像)으로써 민속, 민담, 신화, 종교 안에서 다양하게 그 속살을 드러내고 있다. 본 연구에서는 민속과 민담에서의 뱀의 상징과 고대 사회, 그리스 로마 신화, 성서 속에 등장하는 뱀의 상징들을 살펴보았다. 민속에서 뱀은 공포스러운 존재로 퇴치의 대상으로, 마을을 지키는 수호신으로, 죽음과 재생, 풍요와 다산의 상징으로 등장하고 있다. 또한 민담과 신화에서는 복수의 화신으로, 허물을 벗고 인간으로 재탄생하는 재생과 변환, 치유와 예언의 상징으로 존재함을 알 수 있다. 한편 고대사회에서 뱀은 생명창조, 상승원리, 남성성과 여성성의 상징으로 그 모습을 보여주고 있으며, 성서 속에서는 인류에게 죄를 짓도록 유혹하는 존재로, 다른 한편으로는 인류를 구원으로 이끄는 숭배의 대상으로 나타나고 있다. 뱀은 전 세계에 걸쳐서 광범위하게 그 상징성을 드러내며 인간정신의 원형적 산물로서 인류의 집단적 무의식에 그 자리를 차지하고 있다.

The symbolism implies something secret and obscure that we do not know. The symbolism is revealed in tradition customs, folklore, mythologies, and religion as image with the unconscious aspects which cannot be precisely defined or described completely. In this study I examined the symbol of a serpent in the traditional customs and serpent tales, and the symbols from ancient societies, Greek and Roman mythologies and the bible. In traditional customs a serpent has been featured as the target of combating because of the fear it brings, as a guardian angel to protect the town, and as the symbol of death & revival, and abundance & fertility. In the folklore and mythologies, I could find a serpent to be the incarnation of revenge, the symbol of revival and transformation by being re-born as a human after shedding its skin. Whereas a serpent in ancient societies unveils itself as a symbol of life creation, a raising principle and masculinity & femininity, a serpent in the bible appears as the existence of temptation to sin on one hand, and as an object of worship, which lead to the salvation of mankind on the other hand. I could find out that a serpent occupies a place in the collective unconscious of humanity as archetypal product of the human spirit, revealing its symbols extensively all over the world.
