대학등록금에 대한 부모의 경제적 지원과 대졸자의 직업가치 추구

Parental financial support for college tuition and college graduates’ work values

본 연구는 대학등록금에 대한 부모의 경제적인 지원이 대졸자의 직업가치 추구와 연관이 있는지 살펴보았다. 기존 연구들은 대학등록금 조달 방법이 대학생의 학업 성취 및 이후 노동시장 성과와 연관이 있음을 밝혔으나, 그 것이 대졸자의 직업가치 추구와 갖는 연관성은 주로 간과되었다. 본 연구는 대학 졸업 시기의 직업가치관이 향후 진로 결정에 중요한 영향을 미친다는 점에 주목하였다. 또한, 기존 연구에서 논의되었던 부모의 사회경제적 지위와 자녀의 직업가치관 사이의 관계를 설명하는 데 있어 자녀에 대한 부모의 직접적인 경제적 지원의 효과를 탐구하였다. 대졸자직업이동경로조사(GOMS)를 활용하여 첫 직장 지원 시 1순위로 중시한 직업가치를 내재적 가치, 외재적 가치, 그리고 일-생활 균형 가치로 분류하고, 이에 대한 부모의 대학등록금 지원의 영향을 분석한 결과, 부모로부터 대학등록금의 100%를 지원받은 경우에 그렇지 않은 경우보다 직업의 자아실현 차원의 보상을 중시하는 내재적 가치 중시 집단에 비해 직업의 사회경제적 차원의 보상을 중시하는 외재적 가치 중시 집단에 속할 가능성이 상대적으로 높았다. 이는 대학생 자녀에 대한 부모의 직접적인 경제적 지원이 세대 간 계층 재생산에 있어 유의미한 요인으로 작용할 수 있음을 시사한다.

This study examines the relationship between parental financial support for college tuition and college graduates’ work values. Although previous studies have shown that funding sources for college are associated with students’ academic achievement and labor market outcomes, its relationship with work values has not been investigated. This study recognizes that work values at the time of graduating from college influence students’ job decisions. Also, parental financial support for college tuition is an important variable in this study since it reflects how children receive parental economic resources. Using Graduate Occupational Mobility Survey, this study analyzes the effect of parental financial support for college tuition on college graduate’s work values when making the first job decision after graduation. The result indicates that receiving parental financial support for college tuition increases the odds of prioritizing extrinsic work values(pay, prestige, etc.). This pattern suggests that parent’s financial assistance for children has implications for children’s job values, which may strengthen intergenerational occupational stratification.
