교육이 올바른 마음을 기르는 일이라는 주장에는 이견이 없을 것이다. 최근 교육 현장에서는 잘 교육받은 마음이란 잘 발달된 역량을 갖춘 마음이라고 파악하는 것이 일반적이다. 그러나 교육을 통해 형성되는 마음은 일반적 능력으로서의 역량만으로 충분히 설명되는 것은 아니다. 이 문제와 관련하여 플라톤의 ｢국가론｣은, 초기교육에서 시작하여 이상국가를 다스리는 철인을 양성하기까지 교육의 과정을 세밀하게 그려내며, 우리는 이 대화편에서 교육받은 마음에 관한 플라톤의 생각을 엿볼 수 있다. 플라톤은 이 대화편에서 교육받은 마음이 궁극적으로 지향하는 것이 무엇인지, 그러한 마음에 어떻게 도달할 수 있는지를 보여준다. ｢국가론｣에 의하면 교육받은 마음이란 결국 아포리아에 빠진 마음, 즉 실재에 도달할 수 없다는 부족함을 느끼면서 실재를 열정적으로 추구하는 마음을 가리킨다고 할 수 있다.
It is commonly said that the role of education is to cultivate our minds. Recently, educated mind is understood as a mind with several kinds of developed competences. However, the mind which is developed through education cannot be explained enough in this way. In Politeia Plato describes the process of education from the beginning to the last. We can figure out Plato’s view on educated mind in this dialogue. Politeia is a dialogue that shows what educated mind ultimately pursues, and how we can reach the ideal mind. The educated mind is an enthusiastic mind with awareness that we cannot reach the form of the Good, and with passion for making a constant effort to pursue the form of the Good.
