‘울타리’ 상징에 대한 연구

A Study on the Symbol of ‘Fence’

본 연구는 모래놀이치료에서 자주 등장하는 울타리에 대하여 사례연구를 통해 상징성을 탐색한 연구이다. 이를 위해 울타리의 일반적 특성과 울타리가 갖는 상징적 의미를 탐색하였으며, 또한 모래놀이치료에서 나타나는 울타리의 상징성에 대하여 분석하였다. 울타리는 집이나 성의 둘레에 일정한 공간을 둘러막기 위해 나무나 흙, 돌, 벽돌 등으로 높이 쌓아 올린 것으로 동서양을 불문하고 인류의 역사와 함께 발전해 온 중요한 요소 중 하나이다. 울타리의 상징적 의미는 크게 세 가지로 분류되는데, 첫째, 울타리는 안쪽 영역과 바깥 영역을 구획하는 경계의 상징이다. 둘째, 외부세력이 안으로 들어오는 것을 방어함을 목적으로 하는 보호의 상징이다. 셋째, 강제 수용소나 감옥과 같이 분리와 배제를 위한 분리의 상징이다. 한편, 모래놀이치료에서 나타난 울타리의 상징적 의미는 첫째, 가시적 경계로써 울타리를 나타냄과 동시에 의식과 무의식의 경계를 구분하고 있다. 둘째, 불안한 내면을 공고히 다지거나 방어하는 것을 보여주고 있다. 셋째, 외부세계와 내부세계를 분리하여 격리하는 것과 같이 분리의 중요한 상징적 의미를 갖고 있다. 본 연구는 울타리의 원형적 상징이 모래놀이치료 사례에서 나타나는 것과 같이 두 공간을 구분하는 상징으로 나타나고 있으며, 내담자 내면의 세계에서 무의식적으로 나타난다는 것도 확인하였다.

This study explores symbolism through a case study of fences that frequently appear in sandplay therapy. To this end, we explored the general characteristics of fences and the symbolic meaning of fences, and also analyzed the symbolism of fences in sandplay therapy. Fences are built high in wood, soil, stones, and bricks to block a certain space around a house or castle, and are one of the important elements that have developed with human history, regardless of East and West. The symbolic meaning of the fence is divided into three main categories: First, the fence is a symbol of the boundary between the inner and outer areas. Second, it is a symbol of protection aimed at protecting outside forces from coming inside. Third, it is a symbol of separation for separation and exclusion, such as concentration camps and prisons. Meanwhile, the symbolic meaning of fences in sandplay therapy is as follows. First, the fence is represented as a visible boundary, and at the same time the boundary between conscious and unconscious is distinguished. Second, it shows solidifying or defending an unstable inner self. Third, it has an important symbolic meaning of separation, such as separating the outside world from the inside world. This study also confirmed that the circular symbol of the fence is a symbol that separates the two spaces, as shown in the sandplay therapy case, and that it appears unconsciously in the inner world of the client.
