Digital Objects: A Reconsideration of the Concepts and Boundaries of Museum Collecting and Methods

뮤지엄의 소장품은 인류 역사문화의 증거물이며, 수집은 뮤지엄의 기본 기능 중 하나로, 뮤지엄은 과거 및 현재의 역사를 대변하는 오브제를 수집하여 미래 세대에게 전달할 의무가 있다. 디지털 기술 및 시스템에 기반하여 생성된 디지털 오브제는 오늘날의 사회, 문화, 과학기술의 단면을 반영하는 역사적 산물이며, 우리가 디지털 오브제를 사용하면서 남기게 되는 흔적들 또한 오늘날 문화 현상을 이해하는 데 중요한 자료가 된다. 본 논문은 동시대 수집 맥락 상에서 디지털 오브제 수집 개념과 디지털 물질성 이론적 이해를 바탕으로, 디지털 오브제를 수집하고, 기록함에 적용할 수 있는 디지털 방법론의 가능성과 쟁점을 살펴본다. 본 논문은 영미권 디지털 수집 사례 중 빅토리아 앤 알버트 뮤지엄, 런던뮤지엄, 역병이 발생한 해의 일지 프로젝트를 심층적으로 분석하며, 대중 참여 디지털 수집의 필요성을 역설한다. 또한 디지털 수집 과정에서 제기되는 개념적, 실천적, 제도적 쟁점이 뮤지엄의 디지털 전환과 관련해서 갖는 의미를 검토한다. 본 논문은 방법론적 해답을 제안하기 보다는 디지털 오브제 수집의 중요성과 디지털 전환 과제를 공론화하여 디지털 시대 뮤지엄의 발전적 전략 수립에 기여하고자 한다.

Museum collections provide tangible evidence of human ingenuity, memories, and knowledge. The practice of collecting is one of the core functions of museums, as they have the duty to acquire and preserve significant objects from human history for future generations. Digital objects created from digital technology are historical artifacts that reflect not only contemporary science and technology, but also our society and culture. This paper starts by exploring conceptual understandings of collecting digital objects within the contexts of contemporary collecting and of digital materiality. It then examines the opportunities and challenges of applying digital methods to digital collecting in museums. It investigates three different methods developed by the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Museum of London, and the online crowdsourcing project, A Journal of the Plague Year. This paper aims to highlight the urgency of collecting digital objects that could soon be obsolete, and to discuss the conceptual, practical, and institutional issues raised by digital collecting practices and the digital transformation in museums. In doing so, this paper will contribute to the foundation of museums’ future plans in a digital age.
