본 연구의 목적은, 퇴계 이황이 가려 모아 엮은 고경중마방의 내용 구성에서 나타나는 특징을 밝히는 것이다. 그리고 이 작업을 통해 궁극적으로는 이 책의 현대적⋅교육적 활용을 위한 초석을 다지려는 것이다. 전체적인 흐름으로 보았을 때 고경중마방은 하학에서 상달에 이르는 구조를 갖추고 있으며, 이는 ‘도체(道體)’ 또는 ‘태극도(太極圖)’로부터 시작하는 서적들과는 다른 측면이다. 그리고 이 점은 고경중마방이 단순히 선유들이 남겨 놓은 명이나 잠, 찬들 중 일부를 모아 놓기만 한 책이 아니라, 수양서로 실제 기능하였다는 추론을 가능하게 한다. 이처럼 수양이라는 목적을 달성하기 위해 제작된 고경중마방의 내용 편성 상에서 발견할 수 있는 특이점으로는 크게 세 가지를 꼽을 수 있는 바, 첫째, 고경중마방은 처음과 끝이 상응하는 체계를 갖추고 있으며, ‘일상 공부[下學]’를 매우 강조하고 있다. 둘째, 수양의 주체이자 동시에 경계의 대상으로 설정된 ‘마음[心]’과 관련된 작품들이 많은데, 책의 전반부에는 외면의 단속을 통한 내면의 바로 세움을 언급한 작품이 배치되어 있는 반면, 후반부로 갈수록 마음이 선한 판단[道心]을 내릴 수 있는 가능성을 이치[理]⋅본성[性]과 연결시킨 작품이 등장한다. 셋째, 고경중마방의 중⋅후반부에는 이치의 자각이나 본성의 함양 등을 주제로 하는 작품들이 자리하고 있어 하학을 넘어선 ‘이론 심화[上達]’의 구도가 나타남과 함께, 하학-상달을 관통하는 공부로서의 경(敬)이 구체화되고 있다.
The purpose of this study is to reveal the characteristics that emerge from content composition of the <KoGyeongJungMaBang>, edited by ToeGye(退溪). In general, <KoGyeongJungMaBang> has a structure ranging from ‘daily study’(下學) to ‘deepening theory’(上達), which makes us infer that <KoGyeongJungMaBang> actually functioned as a book for self-cultivation. There are three main characteristics of content composition of the <KoGyeongJungMaBang>. First, <KoGyeongJungMaBang> has a corresponding system from the beginning to the end, and emphasizes ‘daily study’. Second, there are many works related to ‘mind’(心), and in the first half of the book, there are works that refer to maintaining the inner side through external straighten, and works that connect the ‘good judgment of the mind’(道心) to principle(理)⋅nature(性) appear in the second half of the book. Third, in the middle and second half of <KoGyeongJungMaBang>, the structure of ‘deepening theory’ beyond the ‘daily study’ stage appears, and ‘Gyeong’(敬), which penetrates daily study and deepening theory, is embodied.
