A Review on Heintzelman Greed Scaleⓒ (HGSⓒ) Theoretical Framework and Item Development

불교에서 삼독이라고 불리는 탐욕(貪慾), 진애(嗔恚), 우치(愚癡) 중에서도 탐욕은 우리의 일상에서 매우 빈번하게 나타나는 번뇌이다. 특히 탐욕은 우리의 삶의 동력이 되어 주는 긍정적인 욕망과 그 경계를 나누기가 쉽지 않아서 탐욕에 대한 명확한 정의도 매우 어렵다고 할 수 있다. Glenn W. Lambie와 Jaimie Stickl Haugen은 이제까지의 탐욕에 대한 대부분의 연구가 탐욕 행동을 확인하기 위해 어떠한 상황에서 발생하는 탐욕을 연구하는데 주로 집중되었음을 지적하면서 고정된 성향으로서의 탐욕을 검토하고 다양한 기질적 탐욕에 대한 연구에 대한 필요성을 주장한다. 또한 기질적 탐욕의 이해를 위한 적절한 탐욕 측정 도구 개발의 필요성도 언급한다. 그러나 현재까지의 탐욕 진단 척도들은 물질적인 것 이상의 것들 즉 권력이나 사랑과 같은 비물질적인 것들에 초점을 맞추고 있는 것이 하나도 없으며 가진 것을 유지하려는 자극에 대해서도 다루고 있는 척도가 없다. 따라서 기질적 탐욕의 성질이 어떤 것인지를 이해하고 그것이 개인에 따라 어떻게 다르게 나타나는지를 알기 위해서는 물건의 획득과 유지 물질적인 것과 비물질적인 것에서 나타나는 개인차를 조사하는 탐욕 척도의 개발이 필요하다는 것이 Glenn W. Lambie와 Jaimie Stickl Haugen의 「하인첼만 탐욕 척도(HGSⓒ)-이론적 구조와 항목 개발」연구의 배경이다.

Greed, anger and ignorance, so called “three poisons” in Buddhism, are the basic defilements that cause dukkha, or the sufferings. Among these three poisons, greed is not easy to be distinguished it from the positive desire which can be the motivation to carry on our daily lives. In order to assess individual’s greed, it is necessarily to understand the precise definition of greed and delimit the boundary between the positive desire and greed. Glenn W. Lambie and Jaimie Stickl Haugen point out that the majority of research on greed examines greed from a situational state perspective in order to identify greedy behaviors and suggest that the need to study greed as disposition. Also, the necessity of development of scale to understand dispositional greed is raised. And despite the development of several scales assessing greed, all of them are not focusing on the desire on non-material things and a retention motivation. Since they define greed as an individual’s desire for more, including material things and non-material things, the development of scale assessing the desire on non-material things is needed. Thus, as a measure to satisfy all of those needs, they suggests the development of Heintzelman Greed Scaleⓒ (HGSⓒ).
