적절한 쓰레기 분리수거는 환경오염 및 피해를 줄일 수 있다. 최근한국에서 공부하는 유학생 수가 기하급수적으로 증가하고 있다. 이 연구는 영남대학교에 재학 중인 유학생의 쓰레기 분리수거에 대한 인식, 태도 및 행동에 관한 것이다. 부적절한 쓰레기 분리수거로 인한 환경오염은 심각한 수준이며, 이 연구는 이에 대한 경각심을 높이기 위해 쓰레기 분리수거가 제대로 시행되지 못하는 근본 원인을 조사했다. 연구결과에 따르면, 한국에 체류하는 동안 대부분의 유학생은 최선을 다해 한국 생활방식에 적응한다. 그러나 때때로 무지와 언어 장벽으로 인해 적절한 쓰레기 분리수거와 관련된 제도와 규정을 따르기 어려울 수 있다. 긍정적인 인식과 좋은 태도가 있다 하더라도 더 깨끗한 환경을 위해서는 개입이 필요한데, 본 연구자들은 개인의 사고방식 개선이 필요하다고 권고한다. 개인의 사고방식의 개선은 새마을정신의 활용을 통해 달성할 수 있다. 다시 말해 쓰레기 분리수거에 대한 태도와 실천에서 긍정적 변화를 가져오기 위해 근면, 자조, 협동의 핵심 가치를 함양해야 한다는 것이다. 그러한 가치를 함양함으로써 우리는 보다 진보되고 환경 윤리적인 개인으로 발전할 수 있으며, 궁극적으로는 자신이 사는 곳 어디에서나 더 깨끗한 환경을 누릴 수 있는 것이다.
Appropriate waste segregation and disposal could lead to less pollution and environmental damage. In recent years, the number of international students in Korea has increased exponentially. This descriptive study presents the awareness, attitudes, and actions towards waste segregation and disposal by international students in Yeungnam University. The rate of environmental damage owing to improper waste segregation and disposal is alarming and in order to address this concern, this study investigated the underlying causes for the lack of proper waste segregation and disposal. The case study results show that during the period of their sojourn, most students adapt to the way of life in Korea to the best of their ability. However, at times owing to ignorance and language barrier, they are unable to adhere to and comply with the rules and regulations pertaining specifically to proper waste segregation and disposal. Although there was positive awareness and good attitude present, a need for intervention is needed for a cleaner environment. The researchers recommend that improvement in terms of individual mindset is needed. This could be achieved using Saemaul spirits as a tool for change through imbibing the core values of self-help, diligence and cooperation to bring about a positive change in attitude and conduct in relation to waste segregation and disposal. The additional benefit of imbibing such practices and developing into a more evolved and environmentally ethical individual will result in cleaner environments wherever they choose to live.
