본 논문의 목적은 조선후기 전체 무역에서 구무가 어느 정도의 비중을 차지하고 있었는지를 공무역과 사무역, 그리고 구무를 통해 공통적으로 거래되고 있던 물품을 중심으로 살펴봄으로써 구무의 성격을 밝히는 데 있다. 구무는 일본 막부로부터 대조선외교와 무역에 관한 권한을 위임받은 쓰시마가 필요한 물품을 구해달라고 요청하면, 조선조정에서 사안을 심의하고 허가해서 이루어지는 교역을 말한다. 이러한 구무는 교역시기나 물품의 종류·수량이 특별히 정해져있지 않았다. 또한 처리 및 결제방식이 다양하고 공·사무역과도 관련되어 있어서, 외교와 무역이 분리되어 있지 않았던 당시 조일 양국 경제교류의 특별한 측면을 잘 보여준다. 구무와 공·사무역을 통해 공통적으로 거래되고 있던 물품들을 비교해보면 사실 구무의 거래량이 상대적으로 낮다. 그렇다고 해서 구무의 의미를 평가절하하기는 힘들다. 왜냐하면 공무역과 사무역이 성행하고 있던 상황에서도 별도의 교역인 구무는 지속적으로 이루어지고 있었고, 공·사무역에서는 취급되지 않는 물품들이 구무를 통해서만 거래가 이루어지고 있었기 때문이다. 따라서 구무는 외교와 무역관계에서 매우 가까운 위치에 있던 조선과 쓰시마 사이에 이루어진 특수한 형태의 교역이었다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the nature of the gumu trade by focusing on the public and private trade, and goods commonly traded through gumu trade in the late Joseon Dynasty. Gumu indicates a form of trade in which Tsushima island of Japan, commissioned by the Japanese Bakufu to establish and maintain diplomatic relations and trades with Joseon, asked Joseon for specific goods when unexpected needs arose in the province. The gumu trade was conducted irregularly, and there was no mutually agreed norm as to the type and quantity of goods for trading. In addition, performed in various modes of operation, the gumu trade was connected to public and private trades. Thus it illustrates special aspects of economic exchanges between Joseon and Japan in a time when diplomacy and trade were not separated. Comparing gumu trade and goods that were commonly traded through public and private trade, in fact, the trade volume of gumu trade is relatively low. However, it is difficult to devalue the meaning of gumu trade. Because even when public and private trades were prevalent, gumu trade, a separate trade, continued to take place, and goods not handled in public and private trade were only being traded through gumu trade. Therefore, it can be said that gumu trade was a special form of trade between Joseon and Tsushima, which were very close in diplomatic and trade relations.
