A Study on the Development and Changing of Bamboo Handicraft Industry in Korea

The purpose of this thesis is to study changing of the location of bamboo handicraft industry and the circulation of bambooware through its historical development, and the framework of the present producing areas in korea. The data have been collected from the fieldwork and old documents and are analized historically. Bamboo handicraft industry is one of the traditional industroies which have been developed gradually from Chosun dynasty. It seems to have been located and developed in many different districts of the southern region where bamboos were available a few hundred years ago, but its locations spread all over the country during the period of Japanese control. At present bambooware is mainly produced in southern region including Seoul and Yongin, that is, Tamyang, the most typical producing district, Jeonju, Yungam, Namwon, Jinju, Hadong, Yungil, and etc. And bambooware is specialized as Tamyang are producing several hundred kinds of industrial art objects, Jeonju and Namwon a few kinds of fan, Seoul bamboo-made frame of fan, Yungin fishing rods, and etc. Bamboo handicraft industry developed through producing of its products for the income of the side job of farmers and for the local tribute to the palace during Chosun dynasty. Some of bambooware was produced by Japanese manufacture during the period of Japanese control. At present it is produced by farmers as a side job, by craftsmen as a main job and by manufacture; by the former two in the areas which bamboos are available and by the latter in such areas as Seoul and Yongin which bamboos are not procured. Chambit, a kind of bamboo-made comb and different kinds of fan were exported to Japan, Manchuria, china, and etc during the period of Japanese control. Since 1960 a few hundred kinds of bambooware have been exported to the U.S.A., Europe and, etc.
