충효(忠孝)의 교육학적(敎育學的) 의미(意味)

The Pedagegical Meaning of ‘Chung(Loyalty)’ and Hyo(Filial Piety)’

  • 2

It has long been a common virtue in East and West to esteem one’s parent, to love one’s brothers, and to compassionate one’s people. Though such a virtue stems originally from the instinct to protect one’s family and race from the outside hostile circumstances, man added it some ethical values to call it “Chung(Loyalty)” and “Hyo(filial piety)”. “Chung” means to love one’s people and nation and “Hyo” means to respect one^ parent. It is true that “Hyo” has been more emphasized than any other virtues in the East, especially in Korea, while even there is no identical term for “Hyo” in the West. Even in the East, however, it is a recent tendency that only “Chung” is overemphasized as the political system grows powerfully, or “Chung” and “Hyo” is gradually vanishing due to the overflowing materialism and individualism. At the begining of this year, therefore, President Park Chung Hee proposed to inculcate “Chung” and “Hyo” in schools and in educational institutions throughout the country. Accordingly, it becomes a teachers duty to produce students who willingly esteem their parents and devote fidelity to their nation. Even though there have been some argues on the essense of “Chung” and “Hyo” among scholars, it is undeniable that only the sincere, serious, and potential men can understand to true meaning of “Chung” and “Hyo”. Thus, it is desirable that teachers enrich their educational methods and broaden the horizen of their educational field as well by adopting “Chung” and “Hyo” education for their classes according to the “Nation’s” Educational Chart” and to the unique circumstances of Korea as well.
