Implications of MacIntyre’s Thomism for Moral Education

본 연구의 목적은 맥킨타이어의 토미즘이 도덕 탐구의 전통으로서 가지는 의의를 조명하고, 그것이 도덕교육에 주는 시사를 밝히는 데에 있다. 맥킨타이어는 13세기 파리 대학에서 있었던 아우구스티누스주의와 라틴 아베로에스주의 간의 격렬한 대립에 대해 잘 알고 있었고, 토미즘을 이러한 역사적 상황과 맥락에 대한 고려 속에서 이해하고자 하였다. 그에 따르면, 토미즘은 통약불가능한 두 지적 전통을 서로의 용어로 동화시킴으로써 각 전통이 그 내부에서는 성취할 수 없었던 새로운 성취를 이룩하고 있다. 토미즘은 자신이 물려받은 전통과 유산에 부단히 의존하면서도 보편적 진리에로의 도약을 위해 기꺼이 지적 모험을 감행하는 ‘탐구 담론의 새로운 장르’이다. 토미즘이 이룩한 성취에는 부정이라는 방법적 원리가 녹아 있으며, 이는 도덕교육이 마땅히 주목해야 할 교육학적 시사에 해당한다. 맥킨타이어가 기대하고 있는 것처럼, 토미즘은 다원주의 문화에 잠식된 현대사회가 안심하고 기댈 만한 도덕 탐구의 전통일지 모른다. 물론, 이 기대가 온전하게 실현되기 위해서는 아퀴나스의 진리이론이 메타프락시스의 원리를 따르고 있음을 드러내는 후속 연구가 뒷받침되어야 할 것이며, 이는 토미즘 연구자들이 수행해야 할 과제로 남아 있다.

The purpose of this study is to illuminate the significance of MacIntyre’s Thomism as a tradition of moral enquiry and to reveal its implications for moral education. MacIntyre was well aware of the fierce confrontation between Augustinianism and Latin Averroism at the University of Paris in the 13th century, and attempted to understand Thomism in that historical context. In MacIntyre’s view, Thomism achieves new achievements that each tradition could not achieve within itself by assimilating the incommensurable traditions into their own terms. Thomism is a new genre for the discourse of enquiry that shows the tension created by an epistemological crisis and the process of its resolution. It is the principle of negativity that enables the achievements of Thomism, and moral education needs to pay attention to this principle suggested by Thomism. Thomism, as MacIntyre expects, may be the tradition of moral enquiry that we can rely on in the age of pluralism. However, in order for that expectation to be fully realized, it is necessary to clearly reveal that Aquinas’ theory of truth follows the principle of metapraxis.
