부산다행복학교가 학생들의 학업 성장에 미치는 효과

The effects of DAHANGBOK school on students’cognitive development

이 연구는 부산다행복학교가 학생들의 학업 성장에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 부산교육종단연구(Busan Education Longitudinal Survey: BELS) 자료를 활용하여 부산에 소재한 67개 초등학교(혁신학교 10개교, 일반학교 57개교)의 학생 2,708명(혁신학교 331명, 일반학교 2,377명)을 대상으로 분석하였다. 먼저 이 연구에서는 경향점수를(propensity score) 활용하여 부산다행복학교와 일반학교 간에 존재하는 선택편의(selection bias)를 통제하였다. 이후 3수준 선형성장모형(3-level linear growth model)을 통해 부산다행복학교와 일반학교 간 학업 성장 차이를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 부산다행복학교와 일반학교는 국어, 영어, 수학 교과에서 학업 성장률 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과는 혁신학교가 학생들의 학력을 저하시킨다는 주장에 대해 실증적 반론을 제기하고 동시에 혁신학교를 통해 교육격차를 완화하려는 시도에 대해 재고해 볼 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

There has been a controversy associated with low achievement scores of innovation schools. While the early dominant view in innovation school policy is that innovation schools reduce the achievement scores of students, recent empirical studies demonstrate that students in innovation schools gain more cognitive development than their peers in general schools. However, these findings have been limited to innovation schools in Gyeonggi Province among 17 cities and provinces implementing innovation school policy. In addition, these studies have not strictly controlled selection bias between innovation schools and general schools in estimating the effects of innovation school policy. Using propensity score to control selection bias between two groups and 3-level linear growth model, this study analyzes the effects of innovation schools in Busan to examine whether the previous findings are applicable to the effects of innovation schools in other regions. This study employs data from Busan Education Longitudinal Study(BELS), analyzing 2,708 students(331 innovation schools, 2,377 general schools) of 67 elementary schools(10 innovation schools, 57 general schools) in Busan. Result suggests that Busan innovation schools and general schools have no difference in cognitive development in Korean, English, and Mathematics. This leads us to reconsider the previous findings that innovation school policy has effects on students cognitive development.
